Volvo 300 dilemma + some video

Post by #21 » 10 Feb 2017 11:11 am

Hi!

I'm new to the forum and this is my first message.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Vlad, I'm from Kyiv, Ukraine. I own a Subaru as daily driver and have some project car (aircooled bagged old soviet ZAZ 966, but it's another big topic). Anyway, I want some cheap driving fun. Obviously, that's why I'm here.

Last year, just before the first snow, I've visited drift traning. In Ukraine, BMW are the most popular among car enthusiasts. Watching these e30 and e36 is something usual. But this sliding Volvo 340 made my day.

It is 1.7 with welded diff. I just made the video and forgot it.

Next time I've seen it having fun on snow.

Last week a found it in the internet and this 340 is for sale. The price is tasty (allmost for free). It is cheaper than Lada. It is basicaly ready for race events. It is swap ready 1.7 and it has 3 doors. But the biggest trouble is dead cylinder head (nothing strange). Also, the body is full of battle scars as it was bashing head to head.
Now I'm trying to take a decision: to buy or not to buy this killed swedish hatch.
Future plans are:
- find the garage
- swap Clio 1.8 16V (already found it for sale) or even BMW m50b20 (friend is selling it).
- treat the body (just a little bit)
- improve safety (easy roll bar, proper seats, strengtheningthe body)
- make coilovers.

What do you think?

Hi, and welcome to the forum! Is it the actual car from the youtube clips that you have seen for sale? If it is almost free then you can't go wrong but how easy is it to get parts in Ukraine? I think the propshafts will be the hardest to find as they break easily when drifting.

Yes, that's the car from video.

Thank you for advice aboout the propshaft. I've checked the prices - 180 EUR for used. At the same time bmw e30 propshaft costs 20 EUR.
But I've allready found the guy who build custom propshaft from non-Volvo parts. Anyway, it's nightmare.

Did the propshaft cost put you off? I'd love to see another drifting 340 with the F7P engine... but was the car in the video running a standard 1.7 B172 engine? I didn't think that had the guts to drift unless it's wet.
