Volvo 340 & safety
I've found a very interesting report
concerning the risk of driver injury in Great Britain, we can compare the 300 series to other
cars...

The car is very safe.
Was heading home when the steering rack kicked the bucket on a gentle sweeper, was cruising at about 150kph when it happened, anyway cut a long story short about 100-200m down the side of road we hit a tree head on, and looking at the damage we must have spun round to the side or something, walked away with 2 scratches from broken glass and a small friction burn under armpit from seat belt. The passenger got a few glass cuts and a broken rib, and he was on the crumpled side. The officers reckoned i was BS when i told em i was doin 150 as the car still looked like a car, and we werent TOO badly hurt.
Anyway heres 2 photos of it at the wreckers following morning
It was hard enough to make me think we hit backwards cause the car spun when going down side bank... amazingly didnt roll... on the bright side the steering rack didnt need to be fixed lol looking at the second picture, maybe it was a good thing i left them roof rack on after all. The day after i bought the car i had a 6" tree branch fall on the car, the roof racks turned a possible large hole in the roof to a small dimple on the bonnet and then they look to have helped hold the car together from the second hit... who am i kidding, we cheated death.

Wowwww, what a story! It's definitely a SAFE car... Thanks for the pics and your story! What a shame, it was a beautiful GLT... As 5lab said, the accessories are still in the car?Lonewolf wrote: Was heading home when the steering rack kicked the bucket on a gentle sweeper, was cruising at about 150kph when it happened, anyway cut a long story short about 100-200m down the side of road we hit a tree head on, and looking at the damage we must have spun round to the side or something, walked away with 2 scratches from broken glass and a small friction burn under armpit from seat belt. 5lab, that windscreen spoiler won't fit on your Volvo, it's for the models before 1986 in this case...

yeah, i stripped EVERYTHING that was strippable off the car, 1/2 of its still in the garage lol, as the wreckers were gonna charge me $11 a day to leave it there so i scavenged what i could and sent the car off to get boxed up(ie crushed), the only thing i didnt bother with were the wheels, i kicked em a few times in frustration for not turning like they were supposed to... But yea it was good ride, the replacement will be better though, as i still have all the experiences with the 1st one to help guide me.
Still got the roofracks, louvers(aka "funky rear windscreen spoiler") and most of my trick upgrades... would you believe that the air filter, battery, sparkplugs were undamaged, i was most annoyed as i only put some uprated shocks on the front a week before and fixed a leak in the roof that morning.
Sorry though their not for sale as i've almost saved enough for another 360GLT and i'll be throwin the stuff onto that. If i decide to sell stuff i'll start a thread for it.

lol, i got stroppy and put the boot into them, the wheels had rubbed gutters before so they werent in the best nic anyway, and i plan on putting some spiffy ones on the new one so i couldnt give a rats bout them, though i still have the alloy from the spare, its in good nic. Were they alloys? if so they were heavier than i thought, dad got some alloys before the accident and they were definately lighter than the spare
These are alloys i'll be putting on the replacement (its gloss black), havent decided what tyres to use, but these alloys are 16", i could go 17" but thatd look a bit to ricey for my taste (btw, if you have some alloys that you think would top that, i'd be happy to have a look, but so far i like them the best)

i recon you wanna go squarer than that, chunkier to suit the style of car. thats why i recon those old volvo alloys are quite nice - they suit the style well..
have you thought of getting some thick, flatspoked wheels - say 8ish spokes which are the same width all the way up and flatfaced - seen them on a couple of cars and they look good... remember that you've only got drums at the rear (and smalish disks @ front) so you dont really want to see too much of the brakes..
