Not got much further in my '21 goals.
After a clean MOT pass it decided to spit the dummy with the fuel pump :( Should be getting to that soon. Also need to look at replacing the steering rubber coupling which is looking a bit crispy. Still got the other jobs already mentioned to get to i.e fluids etc.

Well here we are in 2022.....Happy New Year !

Thought I would update the post I stuck up this time last year to see how many goals I didn't manage last year.... maybe I will keep this rolling each year for amusement....

With my ever limited time I managed to sort out the radiator, water pump, new hoses, thermostat, bit of rust proofing etc.
Fitted my ambient and econ gauges for added interest, econ gauge is a good bit of fun.
Didn't get there with the other gauges, maybe 2022....
I had the unexpected fuel pump failure, filters, and fuel hoses mess around which set me back a while and some electrical gremlins that appeared and disappeared.
Picked up a nice set of Leo's as the last throw of 2021 which await refurb and new rubber.

2022.....well I still have all oils to change (only managed a couple hundred miles last year) so not exactly urgent. Diff cover to replace/reseal. Steering column flexi coupling needing swapped out and might tackle the extra gauges. Pending cost a SS exhaust is still on the cards. Had thought about poly bushes but still mulling that one over.... Plenty to get on with and should be back on the road early March all going well....

How was your '21....?!
All the best
Dave

Current theory is take out the suspension fitted by the previous owner, rebuild it, back in. Fingers crossed I'll get my workshop finished and be able to move onto some of the larger ideas I have.
Well, that didn't go well  Tbf, the workshop is nearly finished..

I've not updated my thread much this year, but the beginning of the year was a big push on sorting out my engine:
*Mac rebuilt my orig carb in Dec of 2020, we both had a lot of fun solving all the issues around it over the next 6 months. Massive shame he didn't get to see all the niggles sorted, but he always knew we would.
*In February found a replacement boot seal. I know there are several advertised ones, but this is really close to OEM and has kept the car completely dry.
*finally got the coolant system sealed up/removed all the leaks. That meant that hoses that haven't been pressurised for years have taken it in turns to go pop. That went pop on the day of the 300 national, around Newbury :(
*I've a few "in the background" projects ongoing with it, which I don't really want to mention until they turn good. Some are close, others further away.

So, this upcoming year:

Nice one. For me I'm trying to get a cut-and-shut ali prop shaft sorted. It will happen!! The welder has a stainless steel rod to mount the two halves on and will insert an inner sleeve (which he has ordered) under the joint which will be ali welded. He asked what type of ali it was so I have sent a bit to a material scientist I know who promised to analyse it as a freebie ;-0

Assuming that works (?!) then it will have to be balanced, presumably by riveting on some of those steel strips that you see on them.

The welder said the first one will be £180 (I have to cover the cost of the 2m of ali insert which he said would do for 6 jobs, IIRC) and then he can do them for £60 each. So there'll be the balancing on top.

Assuming that works, I need to decide if I change the clutch on the red 3-door and if so, I would use that one as a test bed for the new propshaft, keeping the original one in reserve. No plans for drifting, hand-brake turns or anything like that - it'll just be normal stuff with standard tyres, etc.

Then if (very big if) it works, that might be a way to save old propshafts!!

For your amusement, I have to have a biopsy of some lymph nodes in my lower abdomen on 13th Jan (yes, its the good old 12a number again) and I can't drive for 2 weeks afterwards or lift anything for a month. So I'm not planning on changing the propshaft till the spring ;-0 ;-0

It is very convenient, too, as they wanted tons of jobs done before spring at the steam train place where I volunteer, so I now have the perfect excuse to chicken out. Actually, they have a simplex engine which has been under wraps for years but the late donor's family want it on display now, so there'll be a stationary engine on view somewhere soon too.

Interesting replies....
Hopefully '22 will be the year of your workshop, Chris...!
A very sad loss the passing of Mac in 2021, I never had the chance to meet up with him, but did exchange emails.

Jon, not so good to hear of your upcoming biopsy, I hope anything of concern is nipped in the bud and sorted out quickly. Keep us posted.
You are making great progress on the prop project. Not having a 340, it's one less thing to worry about but certainly from what I have seen on here and FB good props are gradually becoming quite a prize.

As you know I have more than a passing interest in stationary engines....Simplex isn't a make I am too familiar with, is it hot fog or IC ? I know that there was a small power open crank engine made by Tom Senior called the Simplex.

Thought I had scored a boot liner tray for my 360 but it doesn't fit properly, its a proper Volvo item, might be a 400 series liner but the part sticker has been ripped off and there is no part code to compare...

Cheers for that. Sorry to hear about the boot liner. Wow, isn't that odd.

I think the simplex engine would be from one of these: https://www.festipedia.org.uk/wiki/The_Simplex, so perhaps not a proper stationary engine. Fancy having trains in the trenches. Barmy isn't it. I think my gramp used to drive a lorry around france in those days!

Well 2021 saw the end of 300 series ownership for me as I sold both of my 360s :(

I did absolutely nothing to my 760 turbo apart from change the cambelt and tensioner in an attempt to get it started for the first time in five years, alas the piranha alarm system that is fitted put an end to that. I worked out after the engine starts the alarm cuts the power to the lift pump so the engine dies after a second or two.

My 940 turbo is going strong, just fitted a new heater valve to cure my coolant leak that I've been trying to find for nearly six months! And I replaced the seals and fibre washers in the distributor so it now runs a lot smoother too.

I'm hoping 2022 will see me doing a cambelt and oil seals on one of my old 360s for the new owner, the 760 restoration should begin and my 940 will hopefully be cured of all of its niggles... yeah right.

2021 has mainly seen the GLS been pressed into service and so far other than a petrol drain back issue if left for over a week, seems to be going well. It may be up for sale in the spring as I'd like to concentrate my efforts on the GLT, but I'm loathe to do that after putting all the work in and it drives lovely.

GLT had a gearbox leak from the side cover, so replaced the gasket on that and changed the oil. It's just about possible to remove the side cover with the transaxle in situ (handy if you ever get a stuck fill plug!). The 5 year old diff gasket wasn't looking fluid-tight either, so that needs to be done before spring too, nothing too bad but I can't stand any drips over my driveway

Fitted new suspension to the S60 after a cracked spring failed the MOT, hardly using the thing at the moment though! Took months as delayed deliveries kept screwing me over!

Jon, best wishes with the biopsy - hope it doesn't take you out of action for too long and if anything concerning can be sorted quickly.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow Jon.

Your propshaft idea sounds promising, if you need somewhere to trust with balancing I can think of one place. It's about 10 miles from your old job, so might be a bit out of your way though. I've had flywheels done by them before, it would need a discussion if they can do something as long as a 300 prop but they are normally very good indeed.

Cheers Chris.

I am interested in the prop shaft balancing place as most of my ex-work colleagues still live down your way so a trip, or two, there would be good. There are a couple of spares places in the New Forest and the long-gone Bolditz features prominently in many of my dreams ;-0 ;-0

If anyones wondering what I am talking about, its all here:

Hello, miracles happen. I'm back and fit as a fiddle but bed-bound for a bit anyway!! Just get over it Jon, you're only a small fish in a very big sea ;-0 ;-0

Anyway, the hospital was really great.

That idea of reverse engineering a renix keeps coming back but it's a bit beyond my skills-base ;-0 ;-0
