360 Death

Well, as the title goes really... as of Tuesday the 360 lives no more!

Driving down the M1 on the way to a gig in the middle lane, travelling around ~60mph, having just passed a truck in the slow lane.. clunk, bang, slide. Both rear wheels locked, controlled a slide with some opposite lock and with some luck managed to just get it in the hard shoulder without hitting anything, or spinning it completely - luckily it wasn't raining. I can't even remember what really happened at this point.

Jump out.. look towards the rear of the car.. judging by the oil, that'll be the gearbox broken then. My only interpretation is that the diff gasket has leaked a fair bit of oil in the 70 miles I'd driven from home. The ironic thing is, I'd ordered a diff gasket from Volvo the day before as I'd noticed the casing was oily (as alot of them are as far as I've seen). BUGGER!

Strangely, the 'box didn't give any clues - it wasn't any noisier, and went 'bang' without any warning (from being in the car).

So, gets the AA out.. drag it onto a trailer, drop me off at Birmingham airport, pick up a free hire car and I'm on my way again - whilst the 360's being dropped back.

To add insult to injury the owner of the 740 pickup at the BKV drove past flashing his lights  I think he'd understand why I didn't wave back after reading this :)

I guess this is a warning really, if the diff has being leaking.. get it sorted before its too late! Unlike me!

On a plus note Dream Theater were superb live - even though I missed half an hour, and there are also some impressive skid marks on the M1 south...

Probably not.. I don't think it's worth fixing, economically and practically :(

Can get you a box from a 1.7 for like £25? Use you final drive if its intact? Can fit it on your drive with some help from some mates!!!!

Now Steve, has Ali hinted at all that he wanted to practise making a welded diff?

Jesting aside, that sucks bigtime. I'd be interested to hear the results of the post-mortem (if there is one), and what you're planning to do next...

cheers

James

Well.. I'm checking out a 360GL for sale locally for £100 at the moment. I think if the car overall was a tidier example I'd be more inclined to get a replacement transaxle.. but otherwise, I don't think its worth it.

Cheers for the offer though Keith, but drive what? ;)
