Another newbie joining the ranks.
I'll be picking up my first car tomorrow (or the day after that, depending on when the license plates arrive at the dealership), it's a 1989 340 DL (3 door 1.7L).
Being 25, and having worked in car rental (part time) over the last few years I've driven a lot of different cars, but the first car I drove after getting my license was my fathers trusty 340 (3 door, 1.4L) - I was living with my parents back then. My father bought it in 1995, it was a white 1988-model previously owned by a farmer, and it served him well over the next 4 years (and 185.000 km). In 1999 it was replaced by a 1996 460 DL (1.7L multipoint). In 1999 my brother bought a 1996 850 (2.5L 10V), and I've driven both of those on several occations. Unfortunately my father died in 2000, and the 460 was sold (to the family dentist, who still drives it).
So when I started looking for a new car, one thing was certain: It just had to be a Volvo
I looked at 240's, 740's and even 960's, but found all of them either a bit more expensive than I liked or in much worse condition than I liked. Then I found a 360, which was battered an worn - and needed plenty of repairs before it was road-worthy again. It didn't win my heart, but taking it for a short drive did rekindle my love for the 300-series, and I started a nationwide search for one. I found it last week, 300 kilometers away (thank god for online sales databases ). Tomorrow I'll see it in real life for the first time, but the data on it are impressive. It's first and only owner is a farmer, who's now 80 years old, and who had it serviced at the dealer every single time it needed service during the 15 years he owned it! It's got 155.000 km on the clock, and looks amazingly well kept on the pictures I've seen.
I'll post more info once I've seen and/or bought it

It's a DL, and it's presumably rust-free. Should have nothing but the most basic extras (if any), but it looks like it could indeed run forever.
You can see it here - the text is in danish, but the pictures should speak for themselves: http://www.bilbasen.dk/biler/Forhandler ... 078&page=1

2200 eur?
I must be wrong! I read 16900 kr... And on Yahoo Finance, 16900 kr = 2200 eur... I don't understand!
There is black paint on the wings borders, rust problems?

3000 eur! For that price you can have 6 GLT here in Belgium or the Netherlands & Germany
One day I have seen the GLT of my dreams, for sale on a finnish website... Very very expensive! And with the snow there, rust can be a nightmare...

It's a plastic shell, not paint.Duvel78 wrote:There is black paint on the wings borders, rust problems?
Edit:
And yes, it is a lot of money, but not in comparison with danish car prices in general. We have a 280% tax on new cars (multiply the price of the car as it enters the country with 2.80 to get the price with tax), and that makes a rather large impact on second hand trade as well...
Examples:
Volvo 240, 1990: ~5400 Eur.
Volvo 340, 1989: ~2200 Eur.
Volvo 740, 1990: ~6700 Eur.
New cars have even higher prices:
Volvo S40, 1.8: ~43.000 Eur.
Volvo V70, 2.4 (170 Hp): ~68.000 Eur.
Volvo S80, T6: ~111.000 Eur.
All of the prices are for cars in basic trim, with few or no extras...

On a side note, concerning the high taxation of cars in Denmark, it leads to some interesting "solutions" to the problem by car dealers.
First thing to go is anything that doesn't need to be fitted at the factory, i.e. any extras. The second thing removed is the radio (if it's possible, on some cars - such as the Renault Megane - it isn't), by now most cars are fitted with a radio, but it's a relatively new thing - ten years ago, they weren't.
Blaupunkt has actually made a radio specifically for the danish market, the Blaupunkt Odense (named after the third largest danish city). This is the cheapest radio you'll ever see, and has probably never been sold outside Denmark. Most people rip it out and replace it with something a bit better.

Well, that's it.
No 340 for me
The dealer turned out to be less than honest...
It was supposed to have been a Volvo 340 DL 1.7, but when I got there I found a B14.4E looking up at me - a bad looking one of it's kind even. When I got the car jacked up a bit all I could se was rust, rust and even more rust. The sides and top of the car had been kept well, the rest was rubbish. The interior, which is the best part of the 340, was scruffy as well.
So I'm off looking for something else - might even go for a 460, saw a nice one on the way home (I'd prefer a 340, but I can't seem to find a decent one).
