copy of email I have sent to Paul Wakely at practical classics
lets see if we get a reply

sorry I couldent resist having a dig at the fact they consider the 480 a classic but not the 300

Hi Paul ,

please can you add our club to your club guide

it is called volvo300mania and can be found at www.volvo300mania.com
we have about 530 members worldwide ( including U.S.A ,Australia, Israel, Portugal and many Eastern European members ) and attract all ages .

the 300 is gaining a lot of popularity from younger drivers as a cheap and very practical
alternative to saxos and peugeot 106's ,

it is also becoming popular amongst the drift racing fraternity (rear wheel drive and rear mounted gearbox)and for budget rallying.

at 46 years of age , I am one of the older members of this club which was set up purely as a fun alternative to the VOC ,and to keep as many of these often overlooked modern classics alive ,

we have three or four meets a year , usually at car related venues (i.e.Gaydon motor museum ,stondon motor museum, Donnington )

If the magazine ever wanted to do a feature on these cars we have a wide cross section of models available some standard and some heavily modified examples.

Come on Paul , lets be fair , how can you list the 480ES in your buyer price guide and totally ignore the 300 ( lol.)

I have added a picture of my car which is a fairly rare REDLINE model using the B172 renault engine
how much more cosmopolitan can you get ?

a Swedish branded car ,made in Holland with a French engine driven by a Brit

Its about time the 300 was recognised as a classic , it is no longer just driven by o.a.p's and vicars withh trilbys and raincoats neatly folded on the rear parcel shelf

Very best regards

Mick Nelson

Does a black umbrella on the parcel shelf count in the same league as a raincoat?

Actually I do but when I just bought a 440 diesel as a granny carrier (oh the shame!) it came without a parcel shelf. So I went hunting in the scrappies. Could I find one? Very difficuult and I noticed that most of the hatch-backs were sans-shelf. Eventually I found one, although not exact colour and pondered wher all the shelfs could have disappeared to. "Is there a Parcel-shelf heaven?" I wondered. sm14
The conundrum was solved as rounded a stack of cars and noticed guys working under a car. What were they lying on? Yup - a parcel shelf from nearby 5/3-door! sm37

The problem you'll find with 440 parcel shelves is that the lugs that locate the shelf that stick out from the rear speaker covers on either side break off very easily. This leaves you with a parcel shelf that swings all over the place and destroys your rear hatch rubber seal and gets trapped when you try to shut the boot. So most people probably just chuck their shelves out. I had a lot of trouble finding replacement speaker covers for mine.

And good work on the e-mail, Mick. I'll be looking forward to their extensive coverage of 300s from now on...

Good work Mick. Sadly there is this huge gap, between new cars and classics, the 300 is situated in the old banger/wreck stage at the moment, just how does it get the classic status. Insurance companies didn't want to know about it being a future classic.

Hi Mick

Sorry, I've been on leave - the pics don't seem to be there anymore, which is a shame as I'm putting together a 'hot Volvos' feature at the moment and would be keen to see them. We're a bit squeezed for space in the club guide at the moment so you'll have to join the queue, but I'll see if there's room in club news for something. If you have any pics of modified or rally-prepped cars in the UK that I could include in my feature I'd love to see them.

Many thanks.

Kind regards,

Paul
