lets get behind these guys
o.k. you lot know how I feel about kids charities
so lets help these guys out
just a thought but if every member donated just £1.00 (or your countries equivilant ) to these guys ,
it would boost the money for their charity by nearly £600.00
this is a message from Steve one of the Fat People Are Harder To Kidnap
team members who are entering a 360 in czechwrecks 2006
I have never met him ,
I just picked up the story from the car domain thread.
Hi
So, what is CzechWrecks. Well it's one of a number of events organised by StreetSafari that involve driving 1500 miles in 4 days in a car costing no more than £100 .
I'm entered in this event which travels from Calais to Prague between the 1st and 4th September.
We're raising funds for the Down's Syndrome Association and would really appreciate your support. Find out more on our blog and sponsor us here.
Many thanks
Steve

Thanks very much for this redline, there truly are some nice people left in the world.
An intro might be in order here.
I am Steve, one of the three nutters who are entered into Czechwrecks and we will be driving this 1988 360GLT from Calais to Prague via France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Germany and into the Czech Republic between the 1st and 4th September. The route involves the Simplon pass in Switzerland and the Stelvio pass in Italy.
We bought the car for £100 from somone who's sister used it for Home to Rome last year (same organisers) and brought it back. He has been using daily since and simply couldn't afford to tax and insure it all at once so sold it on. Pic1 Pic2 Pic3. It no longer has any of the pink bits (except the big flower on the roof) but we have plans for it that I hope won't cause much offence here.
We managed to get Pilling (Volvo main dealer) in Milton Keynes to give us a free service, brake fluid change and battery in return for putting their name on the side but they've identified that it needs a new alternator. Volvo UK offered us £100 off a new one but that still leaves it at over £250. If anyone's got a spare (for a B200) that they don't need anymore we would be eternally grateful.
As redline mentioned, we are raising funds for the Down's Syndrome Association, something very close to my own heart as my first daughter was born with the syndrome last September. We already have almost £600 not including the savings that Pillings gave us. Of course, like all charities, they could always do with more.
ps Does anyone know how to get the fuel and temperature gauges working?
pps There's still room for more teams!
ppps I know it's not a 440 but cardomain didn't have a 360 (guess it never sold in the States!)
Thanks very much for reading this far.

Looks a great lot of fun in order to raise money for charity. I'll have to check but I think I have a spare used B200 alternator that I could donate for the price of postage.
As for the fuel and temperature gauges - they're likely to be a loose connection with one of the two plugs that plug into the back of the dash - sometimes the pins bend and dont make contact with the board.

Steves right on the gauges, most likely its that, if its not, then the earth wire isn't getting a good contact to the shell. Have a nose, and I'll try pointing you in the right direction if you need any more help.

Given that the dash hasn't been off I suspect it's an earth somewhere. I'll have a rummage if I get the time before we go but it's not the end of the world, just need a gallon of petrol in the boot and the wisps of steam from around the bonnet when we're halfway up an Alp will give the game away on the temperature!Chris_C wrote:Steves right on the gauges, most likely its that, if its not, then the earth wire isn't getting a good contact to the shell. Hi gents! I'm also in the team for CzechWrecks with Stemll... Thanks ever so much for the support on here - most unexpected and most welcome.
The problem with the electrics started after some idiot (er, that would be me) decided to put a new stereo in it, and had some problems with the crappy old Goodmans one we'd inherited. By problems, I mean it tried to set fire to the car! Bought a new radio after this, and that worked fine, once we'd made it fit, but the electrics have been odd ever since... Central Locking doesn't work any more, and the dash is flaky as described earlier.
Ho hum - it doesn't seem to affect the running, and with luck a new alternator will sort it.
We'll keep you posted with details of how she's getting on, and how the paint job turns out too...

Yeah I would check the dash connections, but that shouldn't affect the central locking.
The central locking is likely to be the switch in the drivers side.
The gauges playing up will most likely be the dash connections. Give them a good clean with contact cleaner and then the best way to get them working is fit the dash but don't fit the bottom surround. Then turn the ignition on and carefully wiggle the multiplugs until everything starts working
It just could be the voltage stabiliser chip in the dash, there's a three prong chip attached to a metal heatsink on the back just above where the fuel gauge is. I'm sure someone has a spare, I think I might even have one lying about somewhere, but if not I think Mr Volvo does them for about 8 quid. It just plugs in.

You guys are top draw!pettaw wrote:It just could be the voltage stabiliser chip in the dash.
That sounds pretty likely, to be honest. Think we have the ubiquitous Haynes around somewhere, but what's your opinion about getting the dash apart. I'm sure it'll be easier than most new cars, but are we in danger of having to drive to Prague with gaffer tape holding all the dials on? Any tips would be MOST welcome...
It says your in London Town, if you're close I reckon I could pop round and take a look for you.
The dash isn't that difficult to take apart, and you don't need to anyway on this, you just need to take it out. Take the bottom shroud out, which means four plastic plugs out, choke knob unscrewed and then pull out carefully. The light, if fitted will come out too and you can either unplug that or leave it dangling carefully.
Then you reach up behind the dash and undo the speedo cable.
After you've done that, undo the two screws at the top of the dash and remove the metal bracket that holds it in. Then you should be able to carefully tilt the top of the dash towards you and unplug the multiplugs. The dash will then pull out and you should be able to winkle it through the hole in the steering wheel.
Before you remove the speedo cable and all the other stuff though, just put the ignition on and wiggle the multiplugs a bit and just see if anything responds.

Dude, if you want a stabiliser, I have one from an '89 sat within 3 ft of my arm, on a dash I'm playing with. PM me your addy, and I'll chuck it in the post as my bit to to the cause

Chris, you have a PM - thanks mate!
Pettaw, thanks for the offer.. I'm out in SE London (working in central), not too far from j4 of the M25. We're having a bit of a day working on the beast on the 22nd, so if you happened to be about that's great. If you're the other side of town, then obviously it's no problem if you can't make it. I'll be buying the beer, though!
If you can't do it, thanks for the advice - in my experience there's always an easy way to do these things if you've been through the process once or twice before!
Cheers again guys!!!
