how-to-do-stuff articles

Post by 5lab » 31 Aug 2004 08:16 am

it seems theres quite a few posts on here, after the same information (how to fit a stereo, how to fit a rev counter, how to fit temp gauge, how to sort my carb etc) - would it be an idea to have a section of the forum (or website) where the only thing allowed to be posted is 'how to' guides. we could write them ourselves (i can do a revcounter/temp gauge one, and maybe carb too), and just post them on the forum, thus saving time for the people looking for info..

I've got a 'how to piss off Aymat' FAQ ready and primed

1) Take 360 GL with red interior. Swap oil and water around.
2) Start, and put brick on accelerator.
3) Take pictures and post on internet

Ha ha! That's true...

I'm still angry when I see those videos! I've tried to watch another one with a grey Volvo 340 ( http://www.gemigdinbil.nu/arkiv/movie16.mpg ), it was very difficult, my heart is weak...

Concerning 5lab's idea, I think it's great to bring together the knowledge from everyone; I could write a lot of articles, the latest could be: "how to change the rear breaks mecanism including the wheel cylinder without being a danger on the road" (no no, I'm not talking about 5lab's experience sm54 sm52 ), I did that job 1 month ago without problems BUT of course you must be very carefuly with that, it's not a game cause you're playing with your own security + other drivers...

On a similar note, what about a list of things to watch out for for a newer/potential 340 owner?

There's a collection of common problems that might be nice to know before they happen, like the mileometers jamming (glances at his collection of bust speedos...), gas struts on boots (well, not if you have a saloon :P ), the boot lock barrels falling out (I'm sure I wasn't the only one who had that), the reversing light cover falling out....

Hmm.. On the other hand, maybe you shouldn't list them all like that, you might put people off :P

yeah list them, put people off and keep the second hand values down , that way the chosen few (211 V3m members ) who are in the know can keep getting cheap replacement cars and parts

Yes, but you've only had three of the cars for a combined total of about 2 months!!

It *is* a persistant fault (ie: one that will happen over and over again in a long-term ownership) if not a 'common' one, as is a multitude of cracked door handles.

Sounds a fine idea to me

I would be able to do one on 1.4 carbs with all the faffing around I`ve done on them in the past. Could do one on all the CVT stuff as well though they seem to be quite rare on here.

I`d suggest that people post them up for suggestions/critcism/additions etc prior to putting them up as a definitive guide.

Compared to some, that doesn't look too bad, it's definately a lot more subtle than many others, and it looks professional enough...
