My Dad used to own a 1981 345GL(NNU 980W) back in '83 and kept it for 5 years. Had a go in it whilst learning but never bought my own till 1993 for just £30!(LGM 194W)

1981 343 DL(2.3l), LGM 194W...Now dead!
1983 360 GLS(2.0l), DHG 458Y...Now dead!
1981 345 GL(1.4l), NNU 980W...Probably dead!
Is there a common link here???

Thing that swung me was parents had one from new ('89) and I really liked it. Passed my test, and parents wouldn't let me drive there 2.0 Mondeo (they went off Volvo), looking round at clios and golfs, and Kar sat looking sorry for himself at the back of the garage. Bit of a state, but started first time. Garage wanted rid of it so they put a new exhaust on for me, I sorted out some iffy wiring someone had done, and then spent the next ... years sorting it to what I want!
Hadn't tried to get an insurance quote before I bought it though, 17year bloke, in Watford, on a 1.4. Still, nearly full no claims now (touch wood)!

Simple technic but also modern enough. So easy to fix and maintain. Volvo motors are built to last and kinda easy and cheap to tune. Allmost all motor parts from bigger Volvos will fit in etc... And I wanted something different than every other has, Golfs, Hondas, 300-serie BMW:s etc...

Originally had a VW Polo, but when I was 18 it got scrapped when an XR3i parked itself in the drivers door at high speed. After recovering from the accident I decided I wanted something a bit safer and seeing as my family had Volvo's and had good experiences with them I got myself a '81 345GL.
I have now owned 11 serviceable Volvos plus a few parts cars.......

I fell in love with my car when my folks bought it 12 years ago...and now I'm just keeping it safe. Seriously though, if it were ever written off, I doubt I'd try to replace it as a daily drive...its my example that I love.

Blew my last car up last christmas, it was a reliable but tinny mk1 micra. I needed a new car urgently and found there's very little available in the way of cheap second hand cars at that time of year . Anyway my wife and I went to see a crap Fiat Uno and I took it for a test drive and hated it.
The owner also had a e reg 340 and I had reluctant test drive in it and found I loved it ,and so i bought it. When this one dies I'll get another one.

As most of you guys know I found it on ebay , liked the idea of it being a limited edition model with full service history and a file full of reciepts, Loved the fact it was a 300 that wasn't dark blue or red (pink),liked the fact the number plate was valued at more than I paid for the car , plus it was only 15 miles from where I live. As Peter Kay would say , saw it bought it , drove off ( or something similar )

Parents had two 345s before, and I always remembered them as comfortable solid cars - so always really wanted one as a first car. Having pwned a couple of other cars, and driving for nearly 2 years which brought my no claims down - I decided that I should get one. Bought from Carl off here, I now have a 360GLT! So the reason I now have a 360 is because of V3M!

My parents have owned the 300's (different Volvo models before and after the 300's) since I was born (20 years ago) up until about three and a half years ago. They had a nearly new 84 Red 360 GLT hatchback (however that looked more orange than pink as time passed!), then the special edition black 360 GLT saloon, then a black F reg hatchback, then finally the rare example that I loved and really wish they had never sold! It was a G reg (Yes G, 1989, one of the last made) ocean blue metallic 360 GLT saloon!
So after having grown up with the 300's I did want one. In order to afford to learn to drive and insure a car the tiny engined Fiat Cinquecento was my car for about two and a half years. I managed to find my 360 GLT two years 8 months ago (I think)! Ran two cars for a while then the Fiat had to go, despite being the newer of the two.
The main reason I wanted the 360 GLT is once I found out it was so cheap for someone of my age to insure a 2.0, but only as it was an old Volvo, any other similar engined car would cost me the earth to insure! They're safe, comfortable, reliable and fairly easy to work on. I like the styling too and the 300's are different. TBH I never follow fashions and I wasn't going to get the usual type of car for my age group, ok I've been the brunt of most of the pipe and slipper Volvo driver jokes, "when's the estate and family coming?"
It's nice to be different. Now I have 5 of my own I'm hooked! Sorry about the length of this post but that's my story!
