The design of the 300 series, ugly?

Post by Duvel78 » 18 Jan 2004 05:00 am

UGLY is a word that I've
heard thousand of times but I disagree! Ok, the first years (76 to 80), it could be better but
since 1981 it's quite good!
From my point of view, cars built during the same decade (Opel Kadett, Ford Escort...) aren't
better designed!
What do you think about that? :?:
Collection: '78 343 Black Beauty, '82 345 GLS, '83 340 DL 2.0, '84 340 DL vario, '88 360 GLT 5d (2x) & 4d (2x), '89 GLT, '91 340 vario
Dad's cars: '87 340 vario, '89 340 vario
Lot of donors cars and parts...
V3M for life!

i think that the car (340/360) has its own
and UNIQUE look. the most important thing.

hi ,speedy here ,the newest
member to join. The design of the 340, well I think it is a great looking car, because it looks a
bit old fashioned and awkward and dumpy it stands out from the rest because it doesn`t look
like all the super aerodynamic modern cars of today.I own a 1991 1.7 gl catylytic converter
with every electric thing you can think of, it is all great but for me still the best thing about the
car is its shape...

i think 340 were best before mod in 1982. i own 1981 345,
and it looks much better as his newer brother from 1982. diference is in bumpers and front end
around lights and grill. and it has much more chromed strips, it has more detailed finish.
that's my opinion.

original or facelifted

Post by mgarageu » 21 Feb 2004 11:33 am

quite often original designs look better
than their facelifted younger brothers. facelifting simply brokes their integrity. but the 83 and on
dashboard looks much better than the older version! it is my opinion! sm31 sm31 sm31

volvo 3-series has an imige problem in norway... i dont
understand WY!!!???
I think they are nice... original desiged... and not BORING!... !
(300 series kinda looks like a mixture between Saab 900 and a Golf...maybe....) :)
I resently realised that a lot of people owns 300 series in my little home town (about 20.000
people live her), i almoast see a new Volvo 300 series every day! I think that Volvo 300 series
actually comes secound to VW Golf in the number of people owning those cars... quite cool...
but most of the volvo's are owned by old people (70+), and i higly doubt that those people
use the true potetial of the Volvo's!
What i like most abaout this car is the image problem... people think its a slow car... When i
see a 316 BMW (with full plastic styling) car, i usealy put the pedal to the metal and soon i see
the BMW in my rearmirror!!! HAHA!!!
Volvo 360 GLT kick as!
Me proud to be owner!! :360:

The 360 is defininately a cool looking car, it looks like a rally car in my opinion. Its funny when folk ask what your ride is, i say volvo and they snigger... they often doubt its a volvo till they see the volvo grille or emblem on the back.

In terms of power it can hold its own, especially the injected ones. My only objection to them is that they are heavy up the front end and wear the shocks out fairly quickly, but i'm fixing that.

EDIT: Learned how to spell properly

I like the boxy look, and anyway, as mentioned they are similer to other cars of the same age. Parked next to a Ford Escort the other day, the rears were very similer.

I'd agree that there are some better looking cars, but I like them, and with the original bodykit they can look great. Steves car stands out for me. :)

Anyway, who cares what others think, I like it and chav car thievs wouldn't be seen dead in one :)

Had a similar conversation on another part of the forum.

Compared to such cars as the new peugeot 2/3/407s the 300s are beauties! And of course the fiat multipla
B980EAV '85 340 GL
SMO58Y '83 360 GLS
VK06FKP '06 Suzuki Swift 1.5 5dr
N62NTG '96 Ford Mondeo 1.8TD

And only 2 of them are on the road :(

They are not ugly and specially those first cars were really nice, specially front area. Interior is indeed better in these later models, but mk3 instruments are not so pretty, there is already this factory mass look, imo.

Rear part of 360 3dr version is really nice, there is not many modern cars that got that right and even more rare are modern cars where rear looks as good as it does in 300 3dr.
