Redblock is an engine construction Volvo used troughout 80's and 90's.

The redblock was Volvo's iron-block engine, which was always painted red, hence the name. It is generally taken to mean the 4 cylinder unit, but the name is also used to refer to the 6-cylinder unit (B30). It encompasses everything from the very early 4-cyl units in the PV, through the OHV engines (B18, B20, etc), through the OHC 'high friction' engines (B19, B21, B23, etc), to the latest 'low friction' units (B200, B230, etc) used in the later 360s and 2/7/900s.

The newer aluminium engines (like the 5-cyl 850 engine) are called whiteblocks. I bet you can't guess why....although actually, they're not exactly painted white!

cheers
