I'm Luc, I'm from the Netherlands, learnt about this site via the Dutch Volvo 300 Club (
www.volvo300club.nl ).
Getting my drivers' license three years ago, the first car I bought (two days after passing) was
a Toyota Corrolla from 1985, which was probably the most lovely, reliable and reliable car I
ever had, still regret I sold it! :|
However, whithin half a year I got infected with the Volvo-virus : for 50 guilders (about 25 euri)
I bought a 340 Winner which had run 328.000 km's at that time. Though slow (140 km/h at
most :cry: ), it proved to be as reliable as my Toyota and had more exciting handling
(rear-wheel drive). But not long after I began demanding more horsepower (the Corrolla packed
75, the 340 about the same).
So I sold the Corrolla to my dad, who took good care of it for another year, but now it's sold to
a collegue of mine.
I went to the nearby Volvodealer, where I bought my 460.
In exchange for the 340 I got a 400 Euro discount!
The 460 is quite something in comparison to the 340... front wheel drive, lots of torque and
very luxurious especially compared to a 340 winner.
It has Airconditioning, el. windows, power steering and a leather interior.
But soon, that wasn't enough anymore... I installed 15 inch light alloy wheels, lowered the car
40 mm's, installed Yellow Koni shock absorbers (these are WAUW!!!!), removed the catalyst,
installed open airfilter and a sports exhaust, spaghetti, and some "iridium power bougies".
It now packs about 150 HP and huge torque of over 220 NM's, released at under 3000
RPM... :mrgreen:
However, the 300-series never got out of my mind.
Its functional, no-nonsense design and well-thought of construction and technical simplicity,
combined with the power of the old 2.0i engine make it a great car for customizing, at only a
fraction of the cost of more modern cars.
Here in the Netherlands you can buy a 360 for less than 50 euri!
I bought mine half a year ago, for only 250.
It is a 1986 GLT, 5 door model, sunroof, with bodykit and 14" spike alloy's, NO rust, new
Michelin Alpin 185/55 R14 tires sm70 , fairly good shock absorbers and this baby has run
156.000 km's.
I recently installed a black leather interior, and I'm no reworking the dashboard and
tunnelconsole to match the black leather.
I will soon install a JVC CD/MP3 player and some nice boxes (there is 2 * 20 Watt in the doors
and in the back, I'm sure I'll blast them the very first time I'm going to use that JVC), and
when that is done I will need to save some money... then replace the shock absorbers.
They are good enough for a comfy ride, but sometimes... y'all know... sm63 sometimes I
wanne kick the pedal to the metal. The cars' already excellent handling, I'm sure. can be
improved by installing good shcok absorbers.
I'm totally in love with this car, though my 460 is WAY faster (it outruns a standard VW Golf
VR6... as well as a Honda CRX which has been tuned to about 200 HPs...), because of its
road handling, looks, reliability and its rear wheel drive.

If you can buy a 360 less than 50 euros there why dont you
buy a dozen of them??? I know i would :mrgreen:

But there is a problem now in the Netherlands! The equation is easy:
Volvo 300 club -> more attention for the 300 series suddenly -> higher prices...

How did you get a 150bhp out of the 2.0 engine in the 460?
they have 110bhp stock, so how did you get an extra 40bhp? Im confused. :shock:

I read that to but just a moment a go.. And that is a lie! 460 2.0 turbo has got about 110-120
hp! there is no way to get 150 hp in to that car whit minor modifications.. First of all you have to
install intercooler and raise the turbopressure..

The 1.7 Turbo has 120bhp, its the same engine as in the 480
turbo. The 2.0 has 110bhp, again the same engine as in the 480. even if you chip tune the 2.0
you still only get 118bhp +/-
Alot of people have seen chip tuning as the best way to increase the bhp on the 1.7 turbo,
You can gain an extra 35bhp on the 1.7 turbo engines if you install a superchip etc.
There are some 440s and 480s running 200bhp+ but you have to spend alot of money.
I dont understand what modifications this guy has done to his car. He says hes got a leather
interior in the 360 yet it looks like standard seats :oops: Please correct me if im wrong about
anything.

And im sorry, a Golf VR6 has a very lively 2.8 12v V6 engine
and they are good for 140mph+ and a 200bhp CRX would destroy a 440 even one with a
150bhp because the CRX has the bullet proof Honda engine whitch revs to 8500rpm, and
also they are very good handling cars.

With respect, they never actually made a production 2.0 turbo volvo 440/460, the only turbo
petrol engines were the 1.7 turbos which have 120bhp.
there was a 2.0 turbo planned for the 480 though, but by the time they were ready for
production, they stopped making the 480 in 1996.

I thought there was? But you are right there isnt.. Whit even more reason there is no way to
get 150 hp to that car whit those mods.. And the open airfilter may lose some horsepowers,
because the standard airfilter sucks fresh air and the open airfilter sucks the air near engine=
warm air..
Even if the open airfilter is taking fresh air it still wont give you even an 1 hp.. Unless u have a
dead cat in your standart filter :mrgreen:
The exhaust thing you did may give you 5hp :shock:

Haven't been here for a while...
The 460 I used to drive gained such HP by removing the catalyst (that is a very cheap way of gaining HP, for a big engine it can run up to 10 or 12% I've heard...), it had a custom build spaghetti exhaust, (far bigger and wider than standard) which I later isolated to make sure the heat wouldn't damage the engine or be sucked into the air intake, that (isolating) doesn't gain horsepower but it prevented hot air from moving into the enginecompartment. The engine itself produces a lot of heat as well but most comes from the exhaust.
I installed a "Power Boost Valve" (there is another name for that which I can't think of right now), which kept fuel pressure at a higher than standard level when driving fast.
I installed a cyclone, which was supposed to make the air/fuel mix move and twirl faster, thus bringing better combustion, so more power output.
High power sparkplugs and cables along with a 36 Volts bobine added some more power, especially felt above 4000 RPM.
A custom made camshaft (came from Kent Cams) and finally custom engine management (very expensive!) brought the power to about 150 HP.
Car did out-accellerate any standard VR-6, but would lose (definately!) at speeds over 150 km/h.
For all the money I spend on this car I could as well have bought an 850 T5 or so...
Recently the car got badly damaged when a truck hit it on a parking lot while driving backwards... he claims he hadn't seen it.
Right now I'm only driving my new Volvo 360 GLT, I sold the previous GLT to my dad.
