OT: Non 300 - my new toy

Post by Cornholio » 31 Dec 2007 07:32 pm

So, Brian the 940 arrived on Saturday. It's my first car since I had a 2CV in 1991 that's not been a 340. Anyhow, I have to say that it is rather nice. I wasn't going to put up any pictures until it had been cleaned, but I need to share my joy with someone. The previous owner always spent whatever needing spending on it mechanically, but he wasn't so enthusiastic about keeping it clean. Then again, the pictures aren't very good and don't show so much of the dirt.

It's a 1991 940 SE 2.0 Turbo. Toys include such niceties as electric sunroof, mirrors and windows. It has a few other handy things such as an immobiliser and a load liner, but I think I may need to go in search of a load cover and maybe some alloys before too long.

I do still love 300s of course, but would only consider buying another if I could find a really nice one and had somewhere to keep it dry. The only thing that I wouldn't have chosen with the 940 is the automatic transmission, but to be honest I'm quite enjoying the relaxing nature of it.

As you can see from the picture below, I was just about to try putting a Matiz in the boot. That experiment will have to wait for another day though as there is a great deal of heavy duty valeting to be done.

Looks very nice.
It is a shame that availability of spare parts for 300 series. Is forcing some of us to get newer car as a daily driver. I also had to buy a 740 Turbo to replace the 360 as a daily drive. And supricingly it is much quieter and calmer when sliding around.

I hope that your car is worth the money you invested in it.

Thank you. At £500, it probably cost less than an MOT for the Redline :?

Very nice! An unusual colour for a 940, too.

How is it for briskness? If you get too fed up of it being an auto, we can always rectify that ;) Do let me know if you need any parts - I've got them coming out of my ears, so to speak...

cheers

Isn't Terry the guy who was trying to sell 940 headlights for £50 each on eBay? I hope he's not that greedy in person!

No, he's alright if you deal with him in person, I think he uses eBay as his 'bread & butter' - i.e. is someone wants them at that price they can pay it without haggling. He's got a really tidy 2.0 940 Estate in blue he's been tryingto sell on as well as a minty 940 TD that needs a head gasket that is far too nice to break.

Yup, sounds like a 940TD to me :)

My housemate wanted one a while ago. Any idea what he wants for it?

cheers

Thanks for the info guys. I may need to go and visit Terry at some point as alloys seem to be required.

It's brisk enough for me. Progress is quite stately if the loud pedal is used sparingly, but push it right down and the turbo certainly does its job.

We popped up to Chorley yesterday and it was such a relaxing drive; the miles just wizzed by. I was never interested in an auto before, but I'm quite enjoying it now that I have one.

I am starting to aquire a bit of a shopping list. I could do with a pair of new tail light clusters and a new glove box door. Once I've had a good look over it I'll send you a PM James.

Cheers,

Gavin.

Looks nice, the 2.0 turbo spec does seem to vary somewhat... does it have leather/air con?

Mine certainly went well enough, ate up a load of miles over summer and was quick enough with good fuel economy - it's still going well with its new owner too :)

If you need new clusters, you might want to look out for some clear ones - they look much nicer!

Good luck with it, Gavin :)

Cheers Steve. Alas, no leather or aircon. Leather could be a possibility at a later date if I find a suitable interior though.

Nice car, Gavin! A 940 Turbo Estate would definitely be the car I'd go for if I needed more space. Are you considering an LPG conversion?

Cheers Tom. I don't do enough miles at the moment to make it worthwhile, but who knows what the future may hold?

This morning I was woken up by a discussion on the radio on petrol prices. Apparently, $200 per barrel isn't entirely unrealistic anymore ... I'm beginning to think a move towards LPG might be a good idea.
