So are we all agreed that Steve should get a legacy engine for his 360?

Diesel version + drivetrain from legacy too, that would be a killer, 350nm of torque with actually working awd (Volvo certainly has not one) that has LSD at rear, what would be better? :P

Backfired.... go outside today and the S40 has a flat tyre, wtf.... I've barely driven the thing

Unfortunately this teething trouble is ruining the experience of it, so even this might go when it's fixed to make way for something, cheap, fwd and diesel... dare I say it, maybe even french - probably a 306 D turbo.

All in good cause to keep the 360 though....

Those T4s are pretty good though, I've been in a V40 doing an indicated 144mph for a good few minutes. On a runway obviously.

I wouldn't know yet...

The book figure top speed for them is 146mph  It will only stay if it really, really impresses me now I think.

They move a lot better than I would have thought, and handle in a really competent way. The traction control is a bit of a pain, feels like something is snapping on hard launches. Everthing else is good though IMO.

Ah well that was the first thing I did, turn it off... but haven't really tested the performance of the thing at all.... did seem bloody quick when I booted it a couple of times though.

It's like all fast low pressure turbos, a wave of surprising torque in any gear just whisks you along as if it isn't trying. At full acceleration it always feels as if there's more to come but there's no sudden take off when you hit 5000rpm, just a linear waft.

Low pressure? They run 0.9 bar standard  I was quite surprised how 'boosty' they feel, quite a fair bit more lag and kick in the back compared to my old 940 which was very linear. Actually felt quite sluggish off boost though.

I think John is referring to the modern trend for 'undersized', fast-spooling petrol turbos. Effortless is indeed the words.

Yes that stock T4 is quite fast for a standard car. Last weekend i drove V40 T4 with automatic. It doesn't kick like manual turbo car but when flooring it only way to understand how fast it accelerates it is to look at the speedo. And it is nice that with few mods like better exhaust and bigger cooler and possibly bigger turbo with new chip you'll be looking at 280 to 300 bhp.

I test drove one of these last week for a mate of mine who is an automotive imbecile (although very skilled in many other ways, I hasten to add). Lovely little car and will reward to some extent if driven with vigour. But it's a town car, and after a 360 will feel like it's built out of paper...

306 DT's are flipping useful on fuel, just make sure to get a later one now, the amount of problems mates with upto L plates ones are having :(

Nick_C from here bought one a while ago as a sensible car to go with his Dolomite, and is enjoying it. It even stood up well when he had an incident.
