holiday trip

Post by baz » 02 Feb 2008 12:58 pm

back from my trip took longer--and covered more miles than planned originally 12000 k,s at least i've seen a lot of the country now
apart from a lot of fuel 2 fuses and a now noisy final drive all went well
i changed the transaxle before i left the new one was silent and stayed that way till I got to the northern territory and decided to raise my normal travelling speed at one stage I travelled at 170 kmh for almost 3 hours i'm not sure if the temperature or the speed upset it but now have a noisy diff at between 70 and 90 k's
i've been through floods and 40+ degree temperatures in the past month and apart from the diff noise i've had no real troubles--the last day i decided i could make it home in that day the result i managed to cover 1600 k's in a little less than 18 hours
200 ml's of oil was all it used for the trip i now know the engines in good order at least

Sounds like you had a good road trip, did you take any pics on the way?

200ml's of oil in 12,000 kms? I'd say your engine is as good as new! Mine needs a litre every 3-4000 kms, I thought that was normal ...

As to your high speed run, the Volvo engines really are unburstable (assuming it's being oiled and cooled properly). The Germans have a word called "Vollgasfest" which means something like "able-to-sustain-full-throttle-over-several-hours-without-blowing-up" :D.

Have you checked the level of oil in your diff? A few years ago, after a particularly ruthless "Vollgas" stretch I found gearbox and diff oil splattered all up the rear bumper and tailgate. I'm a bit more cautious these days, as my mileage is getting pretty high (and the petrol prices hurt more).

Vollgasfest, 'full gas proof'? A word that could only be used in a country with de-restricted stretches of road.
Teutonic language similarities can be funny.

You have to enjoy it while it lasts :-) I'm sure they'll find a reason to restrict them soon (new CO2 laws).

You could just about do it in Europe. Gibraltar to Nordkapp (Norway) and back - 11600 kms ...

Good work on the holiday trip Baz, not bad going!

Tom, my old GLT used to splatter diff oil up the back of the car on any motorway trips, a tad more worrying after hearing of Steve's experience, but at the time I made sure it was always well topped up, before the days of Mac's super gasket kits, a small amount of oil goes a very long way with splatters!

I love that word Vollgasfest. not many cars would survive such treatment!

The word vollgasfest is going on my car and that's that. Probably not a good idea to tempt fate but whatever.
Who's for a Gibraltar to Nordkapp roadtrip? We could try to do the whole journey at Vmax.

Sounds like a plan, count me in, we could have 240's converted to tankers to refuel inflight on the way!

But seriously, would be a hell of a trip - and I've always wanted to see Nordkapp

Just tell people "Vollgasfest" is a Norse God sm89

Great road trip idea, I'll start getting my pennies together. The Plymouth to Gambia run 5lab did sounds like fun too though ...

I could do with finding out which is the norse god of destroying car thieves, then I could devote a shrine in the house to ward them off.

trip preparation

Post by baz » 11 Feb 2008 05:53 am

most of all the trip showed me that i have to wait before loking at newer cars to replace the volvo its stock apart from the removal of the rotor arm rev-limiter
mine may have problems as the torque others speak of has left mine instead i have one thats very unhappy under 4000 rpm
after that it goes stupid the rev limiter removed any fun value from it
as it can and will run happily to slightly more than 6500
and the news is that the "new" holden comodore is no match for a 360 used in anger
i may not have had the horsepower of one of these v8 machines but did manage to outrun one with handling alone
i,m sure its owner will forever remember being passed by a volvo on the inside i did let him overtake me eventually as we do have speed limits here but if you use a decoy ie a holden commodore ahead of you then you can get where you are giong quite quickly

I'd be a little careful of raising the limiter too far. On an 84 car, I don't think there's another limiter, and even the B19 won't like spinning toooo quickly. More to the point, it won't make much power up there!

cheers
