Earthquake hits much of England

Post by MJ » 27 Feb 2008 03:48 am

According to BBC News

"The biggest earthquake for nearly 20 years has been felt across large parts of England.

People from as far afield as London, Newcastle, Birmingham, Manchester, East Anglia and Yorkshire felt the tremor.

It struck at about 0100 GMT and lasted for nearly 10 seconds but it is unclear if it has caused any damage."http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7266136.stm

Anyone else feel it? I think I did. :D Apparently the epicentre was in Lincolnshire.

I was on the computer working and thought there was some vibration, and my desk lamp seemed to be shaking more than normal. At first I thought it was a large vehicle passing. (At my uni house I'm downstairs facing the road, and the outside walls about 4' from the road. My room last year was right up against the pavement, and a large truck passing would shake the floor) It seemed a bit much for that and lasted for a few seconds so I was a bit confused, but unfortunately I had music on, so I just heard a bit of a rumble, but wasn't sure what it was.

Anyway I ignored it and forgot about it until I just checked the news a few mins ago to take a break from work, and saw this was the top headline!

Cool eh. I know proper earthquakes can be very dangerous and scary for people living in areas prone to them, but here a little shake like that is rather cool. My first quake :D

lol, When I read your post I thought how the hell did you feel it in Devon ,

it was more likely someone starting your volvo because I reckon that gets driven about as often as earthquakes hit Britain

then I remembered your at Uni

apparently it hit 5.2 on the richter scale

One man was injured when a chimney fell through his bedroom ceiling and many homes and businesses were damaged by the tremor.

It said the centre was 8km east of Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, and 22km south west of Grimsby.

Seismologist Dr Brian Baptie of the BGS said: "This is a significant earthquake for the UK and will have been widely felt across England "

since heard it was felt in yorkshire , Lincolnshire , London and Bedford
but I reckon the Beford tremor was Chesh turning over in his sleep

It woke me up! I'd only been asleep an hour and a half but it must have jolted me from a deep sleep cos I thought it was morning. I'm not far from the Humber Bridge and thus about 20 miles or so from the epicentre, I wondered what was happening, went back to sleep but experienced some very strange dreams...

Well, under two hours  http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/02/27 ... a_useless/

Global warming to blame?"

I had a weird dream too. Someone changed the tyres on our 300 without asking me, and they'd put on narrower ones from some unknown brand, and there was something else wrong with them  How sad...

I should explain that I was busy last night looking up stuff about wheels and tyres for a uni report, so that explains it. ;)

yeah at about 1am this morning, after a few beverages, there was a fair bit of shaking for a bout 10 seconds. think it measured 1 on the richtor scale in Beverley (east riding)

first though was that there was a juggernaut passing or some rather large mammal, the things you think of after a few drinks!

there was some damage in driffield, collapsed chimney stacks, and goole there was the same i believe.

i wont tell you what my next door neighbour thought was going on in my room! first thing she screamed at me!! (ill leave the rest up to you folk!)

I missed it but it somehow knocked a wall down in Seaham, tragically destroying a hillman avenger

Milton Keynes Earthquake Appeal

An Earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale hit the new city of Milton Keynes on Wednesday morning.

Casualties were seen wandering aimlessly saying "bang out of order" "mental" and "sorted". Some are still confused that something interesting actually happened in Newport Pagnell! Some residents of Fishermead were woken before their 'giros' arrived and it caused quite a panic!

The earthquake decimated half of the Fullers Slade area causing in excess of £17.55 worth of damage. Several priceless collections of mementos from Ibiza, Corfu, Rhyl and Blackpool were damaged beyond repair including a cute little donkey that 'broke wind' when you clapped your hands.

Preserved areas of historic importance were destroyed and many piles of scientifically significant litter were disturbed.

One resident of Netherfield, Miss Kylie Davies a 15 year old mother of four said "It was such a shock, little Chardonnay-Destiny came running into my bedroom crying; my hands were shaking that much I could hardly concentrate on Jeremy Kyle".

The British Red Cross has so far managed to send 4000 crates of Red Bull to the area to help with the crisis. Rescue workers are still searching through the rubble and have found numerous "Elizabeth Duke" sovereign rings, benefit books and Poundstretcher ornaments.

How can you help?

This appeal hopes to raise money for food and clothing parcels for those unfortunate enough to be caught up in the disaster. Clothing is most sought after. Urgently needed are Lacoste tracksuits, white socks, Burberry caps, Beanie hats and Rockports. Food parcels are also needed. They include McCain oven chips, Aldi Beans, Monster Munch, Hollands pies and Iceland pizza. Alcohol is also in short supply, especially White Lightening Cider and Special Brew.

Cash donations are also needed. 22p buys a 'signing-on' biro, £2.50 buys a pie and chips, £20.00 buys a fake MOT and £16.00 buys 200 Regal ciggies from the back of Tomo's lorry. Your help is appreciated.

Bump...it was about 14 miles from here, and pretty spectacular. I was cleaning my teeth at the time :) No damage, thankfully.
