Get a cosmetically scruffy one then, so there's no fear about detracting from the value of the car. However, then you might be tempted to spend cash tidying up the scruffy bits...

Get a 440TD.

Good Points;

Small (ish), easy to drive, handle well, comfyish, good to learn to drive in (has PAS unlike a 340), cheap to insure, cheap to run (esp on biodiesel), reasonably reliable, not fun enough to detract from the main car, when the body finally rots (and it will) the engine can be transplanted straight into a 340 1.7.

Bad Points;

FWD, 440, Diesel.

You've got a fair point, Rupert... they tend to command less money than similar fwd frenchy diesels

Diesel is not bad point in sensible cheap runabout ? :shock:

But sure, those 4 banger diesel engines are not exactly most beautiful sounding engines on planet, put 2 more cylinders in it and sound is really nice :)

I don't think the 440 td will run safely on veg oil. Been researching this a bit and it's put me off them. At the risk of sounding like a chav twunt, I think I might get an isuzu engined cavalier to run on chip fat, as I can fit the bilstiens, leather etc from my old GSi.

My mate had a 1200 corsa and it was one of the funniest cars any of us have had. It wasn't actually any good but he used to run cones over in it and hit the fields etc.

I think you would find that problem what ever car you have. I was not supposed to spend on chip but it has ended up with poly bushes and a few other bits that have cost me :cry:
