Soundproofing,front beam,engine mounts

Post by Fuse » 19 Mar 2008 11:58 pm

I haven't posted anything related to my car lately so a small update. :P

Against the current trend I've been renewing the soundproofing instead of removing it totally. ;) I removed the floor upholstery and I've been driving like this for a month now.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/autot/G ... G_3259.JPG

Luckily there wasn't much rust in floors, one small hole at the driver's side floor and two holes at the each side at the inner sills (at the same spots where there were holes at the outer sills before those got replaced) but those few spots are welded now.. Paint had suffered at few spots so I sanded the spots and gave them good coating of rustproof undercoat. Those spots are going to get a very tough topcoat too when I'll get to it.. But basically everything was in better shape than I expected.

Removing the old soundproofing was easy as it was badly cracked and mostly in small pieces..

Then I washed the floors with Xylene and sanded down the spots where the paint had cracked.

and just when I was finished it started snowing "a bit"

 Quite a good timing.. ;)

I bought couple of packages of Vibroplast.

http://www.powerset.fi/autohifi/tarvikk ... oplast.jpg

It's a soundproofing material more advanced than the common bitumen It's much more elastic and can be installed pretty much without a heat gun. It doesn't crack as easilly as bitumen does in cold weather. I'm going to put that in the footwell areas and under the seats I'm going to but common bitumen. I also got rid of the foam material between the stock bitumen and the floor upholstery as it seems to gather quite a lot of moisture.. I'm going to put this in the place of the stock foam stuff http://www.hifikonex.fi/shop/kuvat/vibr ... en3008.jpg It's from the same company which makes the Vibroplast. Soft foam type material but it doesn't absorb water at all so much better.

Dynamat has similiar advanced soundproofing products too, which give 1-2db better soundproofing than the Standartplast stuff, but those cost so much that the Standartplast stuff is enough for me as I'm not building a HiFi car, just renewing the old soundproofing. ;)

The current front beam in the car is in a quite bad shape so I got a "new" one from the wreckers and got it sandblasted.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/autot/G ... G_3271.JPG

Now I'll just have to paint it. I'll use same paints which I used for the floors.

I'm going to fit "new" engine mounts at the same time when I'll replace the front beam.

Drained and filled completely with polyurethane. The engine shouldn't hang too low anymore with those. ;)

Excellent work and inspiration... I was thinking about taking the interior out of mine during the summer to inspect the floor etc.... looks a worthwhile job for peace of mind!

looks good, I may be doing similar over easter i.e. when I fit dampers and polybushes I might take off a lot of the major front components and get them shot blasted and strengthened (welder permitting)

I painted the beam with Rostex.

It's going to get same topcoat as the floors did. :P

~15 euros which is cheap price from a wrecker @ Tattarisuo. ;)

Some progress

http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/autot/G ... G_3585.JPG

Just put in few mats. I'm going to need to buy a one more package, then there's enough Vibroplast for the lower firewall parts too and some smaller strips for the front and central parts of the floor.

I also bought some fuel hose stuff as return hose in the car leaks a bit. I'm going to replace both hoses at the same time.

Pressure side

http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/autot/G ... G_3588.JPG

All way from the pump to the filter with the hose so there will be no unnessecary clamps etc...

I wouldn't bother removing sound deadening, theres a lot I would do before that! - also if you do remove the sound deadening, you better not leave the cd player, speakers and associated wiring in the car ;) - that make hulk mad! (some people go to the extent of removing the sound deadening for "performance" and still fit a subwoofer! )

Now it's starting to look a bit better.. ;) Still need to put some mats on to the co-driver's side and when that's done I'll put the rubber+Splen 3008 mat combo on top (similiar as the stock foam+rubber mat thinggy, but without the water absorbing feature ;) )
