I wouldn't guarrantee it, Pete. I'd join in advance if you want to attend.

Mr Pug....here's the situation in a (large) nutshell. The VOC forum grew rapidly in a short space of time, and continued to be moderated - in principle - by two people. That's a huge workload. Occasionally (perhaps when weary?) they didn't make the very best moderating decisions, and got set upon by a few disgruntled members who are now after blood. Bearing in mind the amazing job the moderators do, the criticism was rather unfortunate.

Then, the club was threatened with legal action by an unnamed garage over complaints (about their work) voiced on the forum. The forum was closed suddenly and completely, presumably as a way of halting the legal action. Many people (understandably) felt upset about this - not least because it cut off communication during sales deals, etc.

As a club official myself (and one who joined the club after first being a forum member) I would like to hear the story of the moderators and directors for myself. My understanding is that that cannot be made public knowledge at present because of the previously mentioned legal action. Again, this has been misinterpretted as devious behaviour by the VOC officials.

I have a personal suspicion that there is a sad irony in all of this. A huge amount of time and mental energy may have effectively been wasted. I was personally threatened with legal action by what I suspect to be the same garage a couple of years ago for (legitimate and entirely true) posts I made on the VOC forum. I essentially suggested that they should bring it on if they really think they have a case. They didn't, of course. Perhaps the VOC's legal advisors have a more realistic view of the risks involved than my hot-headed amateur assessment? Maybe I was just lucky? Maybe the garage have won their battle without ever having it go as far as court? There is an understandable concern that the VOC has given in to the bully.

cheers

Sounds like they (the garage) was throwing it's weight around. I am not at all convinced that an internet forum can be found liable for a comment a registered user makes on a public board The worst I can imagine happening, is someone getting an injunction to demand that the forum admins identify a user so that legal action can be taken up with them.

Unfortunately, british law is very good at shutting down free speech, at least temporarily. That's not paranoia, just a fact. But for a user of a service to report that they received poor service from a particular firm or individual - what can be defamatory about that? Unless that individual turns out not to have been a legitimate customer and the owner of a rival firm etc.

Taking people to court is very expensive, and a lot of sensitive information is bound to come to light which the proprietor of a garage (dodgy or otherwise) probably wouldn't want made public, especially when x number of individuals (the VOC membership) would be listening to every word.

The garage made a bluff, and the VOC panicked and over-reacted. It's all a bit amateurish really...

That is the feeling I'm trying to keep out of my mind. Unfortunately, I suspect it's nearer the truth than I'd like... :(

:(

It's rediculous. I'll certainly be at this EGM when it's called, there needs to be enough people to save it from the t*ssers, as I'd imagine they have organised a fair amount of them to go.

Humph.

Well the VOC site is still off and I'm sure it will be for a long time to come by the look of things. Anyway rather than dwell on negatives the positive that has come out of it all is there is now a new forum for older rwd volvo's up and running.

For those of you with amazons 1's 2's 7's and 9's check out rwdvolvos.org

I'll be spending time both here and there

The current situation is that the level of anger directed at the board of directors of the club and the seriousness of some of the allegations made have prompted them to deal with the situation formally - via a general meeting that any club member is encouraged to attend.

Ironically, the very people who were kicking and screaming that things were looked into 'properly' are now wanting the forum back 'this week'. It's all a big mess :(

cheers

What a shame after talking to you about this a while ago, I thought what you'd written there was a mistype. Not a single mention of 3's on the entire site, including the front page where the poll "what RWD volvo" mentions every single car from PV's through to S/V90's, but not a 300. :( Forums structured in a:
2
7
9
Other (140/PV/Amazon)

Doesn't really let me have much hope either, I was looking forward to being able to share knowledge with the other models like has been possible on so few forums. I've registered an account, and will be asking the admin the decision behind this when it's acitvated. The sharing of knowledge is what we should be aiming for I would have thought, the split of the VOC of what could be it's strongest rwd members by this forum and the subsequent not welcoming 300 owners is only going to increase the distance that knowledge has to jump. That I find very sad

Hi Chris,

I'm glad you have signed up to rwd. The reason for not including 300 series was there was little point in competing with V3M as we have the 300 series so well covered here.

I would have like to section for the 300 as well and include a sticky link to V3M at the top. I suspect if enough ask for this it will happen.

What is your thoughts guys?

It really should have a 300 section, and like you say a link to V3M. People just looking at it who have 300's and no clue about V3M will think "No 300's? WHAT!?" prompt window close. Beneficial for both sites in my opinion.

I would be tempted to sign up if it had a 300 section, my project really spans quite a bit of general volvo redblock knowledge too so it would be nice to discuss both in the same place.
