Thanks guys for your support. I've had one bodyshop quote 16 hours labour, provided we can get new panels.
Luckily I've got hold of a second hand bumper and Hadrian do a new rear panel. I've ordered it and will see what turns up. Hadrian stuff is OK but you never quite know whether it'll fit or not.
No word from the insurers yet. I don't know how long I should give it before I start chasing.

OK so the other driver has admitted fault, and the insurance company have allowed the claim last weekend.
Today I got called by the 'engineer' who said that he had looked up adverts on the internet and seen only 3 similar cars for 150, 120 and blah blah money. So he offered me 200 quid as a cash settlement.
I told him I was not prepared to accept the offer, that the car was an extremely rare model and that it had working A/C leather etc etc, but he wasn't interested.
I managed to get his e-mail address, but he wouldn't give me his written address. Anyway, obviously I'm going to have to fight for my cash, or repair, but how do I go about doing it?

OK, great, the guy looks up 2 or 3 cars on the internet and thinks he can value the car on the basis of that? As if a fully equipped 360 with leather and A/C turns up every 5 minutes! The parts alone are worth much more than that.
Where in the UK can you get an independent assessment of a classic car done? That might be the way to go ...

He's just trying it on. You're quite right to stand your ground.
The very best cars are now making four figures. Your car needed the rear half of the body attending to in places, and some paint....but it was structurally sound (very), had had front end restoration work, and of course the rebuilt engine. That's worth a lot.
You can ask for a valuation from the Volvo Owners Club, if that would be of use.
cheers
James

George Mitchell has got records of Kevin Devine's car selling price and is letting me have a copy of it. It was close to a grand, but was a low mileage concours winner condition.
A valuation from the VOC would be very useful I think, thanks Foggy.
If I can dig out receipts for the engine parts for the rebuild.......possibly, or definitely pictures of the car in the body shop having the front end basically rebuilt, then it'll all help.
I'm not going to phone him again. I'll only be going down the written route from now on. I would have preferred a postal address, but if its e-mail he wants then he'll get e-mail.

£200 is disgraceful for a 300 with T&T whatever the condition, let alone one of such a rare spec. Tidy cars are now fetching £500+ and whilst yours wasn't immaculate bodywise it did have rare spec, working AC, a freshly rebuilt engine and sound, partly restored bodywork. I'd have placed a value of between £500 and £700 on your car purely on that basis alone.
the caveat you have with these insurance fools is that you can always say 'O.K, find me another GLEi SE in similar condition'. I'd be willing to bet they can't!

John Allam's car sold for...I can't remember exactly what, but I believe it was above the £1k threshold. I'd support Rupert's suggestion, informally.

They are indeed trying it on, I've been keeping an eye on the Autotrader 300 situation, and in the last few days there were only two cars, one, a 340 which was over £800! The asking price of adverts means nothing, you can ask £4000 for a 300, the likely hood of anyone paying it is pretty slim, lets face it, no one in their right mind would pay that, unless it was something uber rare and pristine!
Insurers when assessing value fail to realise that Ebay is a better way to help value cars, as by looking at completed auctions, you can see what people are willing to pay. Ok, sometimes things sell stupidly cheap, or on the otherhand people get carried away and pay over the odds for unseen goods or get into a bidding war.
Rupert is right, challenge them to find a vehicle the same spec...... we all know it won't be easy. I doubt they will want to take into account the engine rebuild, as they'll try the old trick of..... your car would need to be roadworthy and in good working order, so you had your engine rebuilt to work, you could have replaced it with a second hand engine or scrapped the car. The point that needs to be made to these people is that you are an enthusiast, who has spent time, effort and money in maintaining and over time restoring the car. Their trick is to give someone a couple of hundred pounds for what they consider and 'old banger' and they'll be over the moon, their cheap runabout has been written off, they've got a couple of hundred quid to find another, situation sorted. This car is not an 'old banger,' it is rare for starters and they need to realise it is something you cherish and have invested time and money in, not something you aim to run into the ground.
As the point has been made, working AC on a 300 is nearly as hard as finding rocking horse droppings. People are willing to pay quite a sum for all the bits and pieces to fit it to their car, your car has it fitted from factory, and the leather, and the electric sunroof, these items alone are worth far more than their offer.
Another advert to remember was the GLT with bodykit that was on Autotrader a little while back for somewhere around £1300, did anyone ever get any info on it or see it?
Good work on defending yourself mate and do indeed put things in writing, email isn't perfect, but if it's all he'll offer, keep hard copies of everything you send and receive. Also, when you email him, cover all the points he made in the phone call and ask him to confirm that you have understood them all, that way he cannot claim to have said different things at a later date, as phone calls mean very little.
I'd practically demand in this situation, that due to the time and money you've invested in the car, and the restoration and modification work you've done and what it means to you, that as the accident was not your fault, that your car is returned to the same condition it was prior to the accident, unless they offer you a significantly larger sum of money!
Pete

I believe Aymat also has a sales contract for his GLT Millionaire saloon, which sold for something like 700 pounds and isn't in as good as a condition as Andy's car. Maybe he can fax you a copy? I could get it translated if needed ...
