volvo 340 raising

Post by paul » 28 May 2008 09:51 pm

hello everyone...
my name is paul mocan, and i am a 20 year old student in cluj-napoca, romania. i am a proud owner of a 340 1.6 diesel volvo, that i adore, but i have some issues that i hope you could help me out with.

i have problems with the front suspension. it is TO LOW. i know that everyone here talks about lowering the car, but i would be interested in raising it with as much as posible. Here in Romania we have some bad roads, and i dont like to hit the ground every once in a while with the engine. i already hade to weld the.....(i have no idea how it's called in english, where the oil from the engine gathers, and is the lowest part of the engine, can anyone help with the name??). Just to weld it cost me quite a bit, and beeing a student doesn't help a lot with budget. By the way, around here is a very rare car, and i can't find parts, almost at all.

could you guys help me out? point me in the right direction? i would like to make it as off-road as posible (just in case).

thank's a mill...
paul mocan

I saw some pics of your car in other topic. And just as i thought front springs and probably shock absorbers are knackered. So try replacing them first and if it doesn't help then try find raising suspension parts.

so you think that i sould go for the standard? i did change the shock's last year, but not the springs. i have a volvo 340 spring set, but i did not install them (i got them after i installed the shocks), and the reason i didnt install them yet is that i wanted to ask around if there is a better way, longer springs, to raise it up as high as i can.

Having driven over a fair few level crossings in Romania, I can see why lowering your car is the last thing you'd want to do :-)

I did a bit of research on the springs that are still available for the Volvo 300 a little while ago - there are some manufacturers who make springs which are 340 mm in length (I believe the standard length is 328 mm, 320mm on GLTs).

The details:

KAGER 84-0018 Ø 128 mm length 340 mm

TRISCAN 8750 2717 Ø 128 mm, length 340 mm

i just came back from a shop and this is what i found out.
there are 2 models of front springs that i can find and buy here, but
just one is available.

height: 340 mm
diameter of wire: 12 mm
diameter: 128 mm

and the second version
heightL 365 mm
diameter of wire: 11
diameter:127

the available option is the first one, and they cost 45 euros each.
How's the price? do you think this will raise the front? how high sould
i expect to get?

Wow, 365 mm! Do you have a make and a part number for that?

€45 sounds fine, in Germany you'd expect to pay between € 40 (NK) and € 60 (Spidan) for one spring ...

i don't have a make or ma part number... but i can go ask.
the guys at the store, told me that the shorter one is more rigid, and the long one is moreflexible. is it true? what would you recomand? to make my volvo as high as it gets, but be stiff enought for good handling.

you'd find that stiffened ones at standard ride height would also be higher than the stock saggy ones.

so you'd go for this?

height: 340 mm
diameter of wire: 12 mm
diameter: 128 mm

whould it be better to have 1 extra mm in diameter of wire
or have 26 mm in height?

i am stuck at this point, and have absolutly no idee witch way to go...
