I'd be surprised that'd be an S14 for the price, sure it wasn't the previous S13 model? Just a bit weary of the engines in the S13 model, the bottom ends seem to be made of chocolate

you only get the chocolate bottom end on an s13 as an optional extra, the standard bottom end is far worse

If I was after a sports car, I'd probably go for a Porsche 924/944. Bomb-proof mechanics, no trouble with new or used spares and a guaranteed future classic with rising used values. Transaxle too! For that, I'd take into account a few "horsepowers" less. I especially like the really early 924 - on steel wheels, without a rear spoiler and only 125 bhp from its VW LT engine ...

If it's cheap jap power you're after though, a late '80s / early '90s Supra Turbo (238 bhp) might be worth thinking about. Over here, they're cheaper and more powerful than a 200 SX.

I know how you feel Steve, but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet :(

How pratical does your car need to be? There's a bit more choice if you start looking at 2 seater cars (MR2s, MX5s, MGFs etc). If you really felt like going crazy you could even look at TVRs.

Assuming you need a bit more space then I'd be looking at Supras like Tom says, Imprezas, E30 325i/318iS (or even a 525i), Vauxhall Omegas, XR4x4, Alfa 75 V6, Lexus Soarer and of course the 200SX. They're all the cars that have been on my list when I've been looking for a similar car to you.

It doesn't have to be that practical but I want it to be comfy and have some toys, which is why an S14 200sx fits the bill precisely. I don't really want a big barge-like saloon either really. Subaru would be nice but if you've ever been to Birmingham, you'd know why I can't possibly consider one. Plus the interior/dash is horrid!

Not sure if I'm a big fan of convertibles, although I imagine pretty fun for a while.

we cant restrict ourselves to one make/model of a car our whole life, sure the 360 is one heck of a car but its hardly a deciding factor when measuring t up with other cars. To me RWD is a brag thing thats only useful for late night hooning.

Front wheels scrabbeling for grip in the wet when you want to get off quickly - hugely annoying ... :-(

It totally depends on the chassis (and even the wheel/tyre choice). I've owned a fair few cars (FWD, RWD, 4WD) and I think one of the quickest point-to-point cars is Nat's current 106. It's just setup perfectly and could run rings round lots of supposedly better cars. Similarly a 205 is a fun little car to drive quick. But I think RWD and 4WD become a lot more relevant as you start upping the power and torque levels, and the benefits become a lot more apparent.

300ZX's are great, but running costs are a killer. The 200SX is much simpler to look after and probably a fair bit cheaper to run. I can totally understand why that seems to be your top choice, but also consider a mk2 MR2 Turbo if you can live with the reduced space.

Hmm just ended up looking at prices of T5R's and it's kinda brought that into the equation too, the sound alone almost sells it to me...
