Haynes manuals???

Post by m_robi1331 » 04 Jul 2008 08:34 am

Hi!
I want you to ask how much would cost a 300'series Haynes service/parts manual including shipping to Romania/Targu Mures.

And since next year I will buy a V40 as well I would like to know the price for a manual for this modell, if there is a manual for V40...
I would be very happy if somebody could tell me. Thanks guys and have a great weekend!

You might want to try PM'ing Sorin (sorin_ms66)

He lives in TM, and I gave him my Haynes Manual when I visited him last year :-)

Thank a lot, I will PM him.
But anyway I would like to have them in original, so if somebody spots something, please tell me.

There are plenty to be had on UK Ebay, but posting them on to Romania (and payment for the postage) might be a bit difficult ...

When you're looking for Haynes manuals make sure to get the most recent one - it looks like this:

Image

It has a supplementary info section on the most recent models including power steering, electric mirrors, catalytic converters, different service interval recommendations etc ... But don't believe everything the manual says, it's known to be wrong in places ;-)

Sorry, I have to strongly disagree with that advice. First I got the relatively fresh printing (still, 1996) with the cover that looks like the one in your picture. But I was really disappointed when I found this text in the Transmission and final drive chapter, paragraph 7 (marked with five "black spanners") :
dumbed down Haynes manual wrote:Overhauling a transmission unit is a difficult and involved job for the DIY home mechanic.
...ending with
dumbed down Haynes manual wrote:Before dismantling the transmission, it will help if you have some idea which area is malfunctioning. Certain problems can be closely related to specific areas in the transmission, which can make component examination and replacement easier.
...the whole paragraph of text being exactly the same in the CVT and manual gearbox sections, except for the addition of the word "manual" in a single place  - not being very helpful are you Mr. Haynes...

After this, I bought an older edition off eBay, it just arrived today. It seems that it's from 1993, it's got the older black-and-white cover picture, and it looks like this:
Image

And, to my surprise, almost 100 more pages between the covers... Most pictures are larger and some are just so much clearer that it actually makes me wonder, are the pictures made worse on purpose (some pics in the newer book look like they've been photographed off the old book with a soft focus lens).

Most importantly (for me) the transmission section isn't missing any bits of information, I haven't gone through the whole book yet to see what else is missing in the newer edition, but they've presumably had to snip a lot to fit it in 100 pages less... it can't all be because of smaller pictures :)

But in this case "most recent" is a relative term, so the 1993 edition already had this section as well.

Difference is one is a Service and Repair, the other is a Workshop manual, as you say the different piccy on the front gives it away. Both versions come in different ages, latest version of the workshop is

though no idea of the difference to the green, I didn't think that went up to 1991!

I just bought the top one off ebay, with the reddyish colour and the solid car instead of the xray one. Hope it's the right one.

Like all good enviromentalists I've gone green.
Chucked the red one in the bin.

I have neither PAS or EW,ergo green is best.
It's right too about the trans/drivetrain section in the green-exploded diagrams and torque settings etc.... from memory.Much better than the red for such messing about.

I can't believe I never knew there were two versions, a 'service and repair' and a 'workshop' :o

Turns out I have a 'service and repair' :?

Nor did I

If you want to do some "workshop work" rather than just "service and repair" I'd guess the Volvo green books are the ones you really want. There're some in the technical resources section ...

Volvo Green Books are best, but what if your cars are 6 miles from home and you don't have internets in the lockup?
Why, you download the green books to a laptop like so:

I got mine off UK ebay for 99 pence. Postage to Australia was much cheaper than paying for one locally!
