Yeah, the first 1-3 letters are the town. Then follow 1 or 2 letters and 1 to 4 numbers.
It cost me 10 Euros something, as long as the number isn't registered to someone else, you can choose your own plate (within a few restrictions, the really short plates are limited to motorbikes for example).
I was speaking to a Belgian yesterday who said choosing your plate there is possible, but really expensive (around 600 Euros) Aymat had been considering "360 GLT" .

Wow, that's from one end of the scale to the other! It would cost around $415 to get one with 360GLT on it here...but it's not available....
