volvo 343 vario black beauty

Post by dafdaffer » 18 Aug 2008 08:13 pm

Hi All, Today me and my friend found a volvo 343 in albert looms DERBY, it was the black beauty version with 60k on the clock Black with red interiour, i knew that this car was in a garage near to us but was not sure where, obviously with the price of scrap going up it has ended up in there, it was always garaged and Well serviced and never used in the rain, one owner from new.

when it went into the yard it was imculate but now has had the carb removed by force, the windscreen smashed and the rear window smashed, even a fork truck has driven ito the side. the interiour and exteriour was like new,

we had a choice as it had minutes to go before it was proccesed, when they puncture the sump, tank and shockers and remove the rad. we rushed around the yard trying to find out what we could do to save it, luckily the owners are very good people who are also very helpful, and my friend manged to buy the car and bring it home, however this leaves us with a question, is the carb the same as later models?

we will now see how we go on,

ps james if you are reading this it was nice to meet you and princethorpe

What an amazing find! I'm very envious! Wouter will be astonished when he reads the story! The original Weber carb which I have on my 1980 343 is known to be troublesome and I still have idling problems with mine which Wouter certainly improved at Princethorpe. I understand that the carbs were set up in the factory on a machine prior to fitting to the car and that if someone has played with the mixture screws and the position of the flap at tickover it's almost impossible to get right. He's suggested a later carburettor, still the Weber 32DIR but with suffix 104 or 109. This is what he has done with his black beauty. I'm sure one will turn up. If two turn up then I'm looking for a replacement for mine as well!

When you say that the carb has been forcibly removed does this mean that the inlet manifold is damaged too?

I've been surfing V300mania further!

This thread gives an excellent resume of the carbs on the 1.4. I think that we're looking for a carb from the 4E engine.

B14.4E was latest generation of that 1.4 litre engine used in Volvo, imo. My books are at garage at the moment, but I believe earlier type was B14.3E, but differences are perhaps minor.

Ah, found good source from engines, maybe some use for you:
http://www.volvo-club.cz/engines_list.php

In that list, check notes of engines, there are Weber and Solex carbs used in different versions of engine.

Ditto that, I've already replied in Stefan's thread. Well done for rescuing that car Paul, it's good to hear stories like that even if it was damaged in the scrappy! It could have been worse ...
