I thought my new credit card type licence was valid til I was 70 turns out the photo has to be renewed every ten years and you can be fined if you miss out on doing it

Yeah, that really annoyed me too! I really regretted swapping my old tatty licence for the credit card version after I found that out.

Also - when you rent a car in the UK, they ask for the paper version as well, to see if you have any points. So really you need to carry both version with you ...

Interesting Tom I still have the paper one only but unfortunately I got some points for going too fast in an urban area in April last and was under the impression at the end of the three years of their life I could buy a credit card style one so as to have a clean licence for (say) renting a car and not paying a premium on top.

Still Got my paper licence, its valid till 2049, and i'll very reluctanlty change it if ever at all.

Has still got all my previous speeding convictions on them but I don't care as they were so long ago its never effected my ability to hire stuff.

A paper licence will get you out of lots of trouble whilst on holiday in the USA especially for speeding.

The officer's comment when i said hey be carefull with that it's gotta last me till 2049 was " what in the hell is this shit???? I ain't never seen a licence like this!!!!!! "

He disappeared to his car for 5 mins and came back and let me off.

Two years ago I rented a car at Birmingham airport and only had the credit card style licence with me. They asked for the paper version so they could check up on my points - I have no idea where my paper version is anymore! So I had to pay a premium so they could ring the DVLA and check up on whether I had any points.

Good job they didn't ring Flensburg to enquire about my points in Germany Shows you how rediculous the whole thing is

I had real trouble renting a car in Germany with only my paper licence. That was part of the reason why I got the credit card version ...

just to clear up what might be some confusion for people who only have the older paper licence.

With the new credit card one there is also a paper one which carries more information thwn could be put on the plastic card ,

this includes any points you may have got

We got rid of paper versions quite long time ago, I have only plastic version, which is big, hard to fit into wallet, later version is such credit card type as yours.

Late 2045 is when I need to renew mine, but it can change.

It seems strang hearing people talking about credit card licences.In this part of the UK we have had them since the mid 1980s.Befoe that we had kittle blue books.

The advantage of the credit card ones is that you can carry them for ID with less risk of them getting damaged than a paper one.
