Newbie from Perth WA *update 01/08/10*

Post by whiskeyonesix » 24 Nov 2008 01:18 pm

Hi Folks,

After weeks of lurking, I thought I'd better introduce myself. The names Tom, and I've recently emigrated to Perth, Western Australia, though originally from Birmingham UK.

This is the first 300 ive owned, though in the past ive owned two 700s, one a 740GL, the other a 740SE - both 1988 B200E saloon models.
The SE I turned into a turbo lookalike, and added a few ( Tasteful!) graphics, as well as a half-leather interior I was lucky to find.

Anyway......

Image

Bought two months ago for not much, 220,000 on the clock, new cylinder head (no idea why - not much history...) and totally standard (unless you count three working speakers as modifications of course!)
It'll stay this way for a while, but I think a stereo/speakers upgrade is in the pipeline - and a damn good polish!

I think these must be a rarity over here, I know parts are getting harder to find.

Tom.

Nice GLT, welcome Tom! Seems the MkIII is quite rare in Aus, most tend to have MkIIs ...

Tom

P.S. does it have air con? Drool ...

It does have Air-Con yes (though I'm damned if I can get it to work, I think its got an electrical fault somewhere - I'll have to have a look at it soon, as its gonna get pretty warm in the new year! )
Its a nice car - most older motors over here seem to be bashed around a bit - people in WA dont' really know how to drive.....
I'd like to source a couple of blanks for the front bumper, and also a replacement radio, but other than that, theres not much up with it....

Oh, a few of those "Prancing Moose" ferrari-alike stickers as well :)

I've just changed the plugs, rotor arm, dizzy cap and oil on it, and in the new year (when I have a little more spare cash_ I'll get it booked into the local Swedish car specialists for them to give it the once over)

Hi there from another Aussie!
For the stickers, visit http://www.davebarton.com and you will find a bewildering array of sizes and styles!
I have them on my 242GT and my father's 245 and my little brother's 360 which has been debadged will be getting some, they will be the only badges on the car.

Nice looking Mk3, they aren't too common here.
360s are vanishing fast.
Aircon is almost universal on them here.

Do you have the Imparts chain over there? I find they are pretty good on volvo parts prices although they do sell a lot of Scantech stuff.
Also for mail order stuff and big ticket items like water pumps etc, volvcare in Melbourne are good on price.
Also check out http://www.dvs.net.au who are based in geelong, but can do extremely good prices on OEM stuff, service parts and suspension and brake etc.
He does a whole heap of modifying stuff for 240s but not much for 360s however anything that is common to both, and any suspension/brake/service stuff he can get. Tell him Greg from Tasmania sent you!

Cool cars, have fun enjoying it!
Volvos rock!

Cheers for the info and welcome Folks, I'll try those place you recommended for parts and suchlike.

Just as a question..... Where would I be able to source a set of those funky side graphics the limited-edition 340s had? (redline???) I think a set of those would really set the car off.

I figure I owe it to myself to debadge the thing as well. I'll give Dave's site a good look over when I paid next week - A sense of humour is very important when choosing to drive a volvo - especially here! :)

Hi Folks,
Here's just a couple of new pics for you, I took quite a few more, but it was very sunny here today and they didn't come out too well.

Image

Note the certain pinky tinge....

Image

A slightly better picture :)

The car's done 240k now - 20k in two years is good going for me! - and apart from a few little issues I've done absolutely nothing to it (I'm rather proud of that in a fairly shameful way!). I changed the sparkplugs, leads, dizzy car and rotor arm a while back, and an oil change is on the list.
The paint is getting really faded now - i've tried to give it a polish, but the paint comes off, so I'm going to let nature take it's course there and address the issue when I can afford to have it repainted.
Of the modifications I planned to do, I've done pretty much nothing, but thanks to VND for the Bumper Vents and the Rear LIghts 340pw .
It's going into the garage soon to get checked over, as my work is moving to the other side of the city, and it'll put my daily mileage up from 35 kilometers to nearly 100 - there is absolutely nothing I can do about this sadly except make sure the car is going to be ok doing it. The alternative is to not use the car for work and borrow the Wife's car. But I'd rather not tool around in a canary yellow Hyundai Getz thankyouverymuch!

Things to do...

Get the bumper straight.
Brakes
Speaker upgrade
service (of the damn good variety )
paint
B230 16V conversion...... I wish!

She looks awesome mate, much better nick than ours seem to be over here too. Even the paint fade isn't as bad as my old red one!

Red has to be the nicest looking for a GLT when it's not pink.

I dig the faded red mind. Patina winz.

It alsways looks WORSE if you try and polish it imo. Just goes brighter pink!

Lovely lookin car though Tom. I think we need more photos of this car on V3M. :D

I'll try and get a few more pics then! Those pics don't show up the parking dings or the rust monster that lives in the sills though :)

Trouble is... I only ever go to work and back in it, as when me and SWMBOOIDWO* go for a day out anywhere, she refuses to be seen in it as "It's old, unreliable and scruffy, and it'll break down"

I'm old,unreliable and scruffy!!!

No I'm not ( Actually from Walsall in the Black Country ), The "WhiskeyOneSix" comes from about 7 years ago when I was a logistics contractor for the MoD. We used to use callsigns when speaking to each other over the radio using the phonetic alphabet (Alpha, bravo, charlie, delta etc), I started using W16 on a couple of the Martial-Arts and Landrover forums I was on at the time, and I just kept using it :)
