tv to be used for watching progs , dvds and the kids wi

so whats best 1080 lcd or plasma

any experiences ( good or bad ) of different makes appreciated as would be any recommendations re various brands etc and which ones to avoid
looking at between 42 and 50 inch sets.

plasmas are better man.
but not to the extent of the difference in price dude. IMO

i think fast paced action looks a bit sharper in plasma, a little blurred round the edges if its really fast on a lcd. but unless youre a stickler i'd shoot for lcd.

Fartgos have got a decent one up for 329 i think man.

Dolby are working on an implementation of LCD (I think) which improves contrast, with ultrabright LEDs lighting the picture from behind, in areas of colour on the screen. Not sure when it's available, but it DOES look good! (better!)

Yea plasma's do suffer from images being burnt into the screen if there left with the same image for awhile, an example would be my housemates friend had one and watched sky on it for awhile and when he changed the channel he could still see the sky logo in the top corner of the screen. by house mates has a 40" lcd samsung and that is the balls but i believe it was quite expensive.

It all depends on what your budget is, but be wary that there are some cheap big tv's out there which boast HD but they suffer from low contrast ratios which is why they go so cheap so the image quality wont be as nice as its counterparts.

Also im not sure if this is a problem with tv's as much as it is with monitors but response times should be looked at aswell, especially if your gonna play games on it, which measures how quick the image goes from the player/console to the screen.

Oh also (may have to research this) Sony (i think) have been developing a new technology with screens which will give sharper images then lcd or plasma which will mean that when they release lcd and plasma's will drop in price, so could be something to watch for.

cool thanks for that, budget is about £800 but I want more than a years warranty included in that ( currys and comet warranty is about £250 )
samsung , panasonic,phillips, sony and toshiba are looking good so far

Hmm Lcd may be the way to go then, not just because they cost less but they are also a lot more robust, lighter and they dont eat up as much energy as plasma's but one thing to look for with lcd screens is dead pixels, this is when there are pixels which dont do anything and you may find that there
will be more of these on a cheap screen, so it may be better to go for something higher quality but smaller screen size, as some companies wont replace screens with dead pixels as its something which just happens.

Mick, Plasmas also need regassing after 4 years or so. For your budget, either s/h plasma budgeting for a regas, or LCD mate

Thats a lot of tv for the money, What i tend to do when buying electrical products is to get the make and model and have a looksie on the tinterweb at reviews, read through and see what they have to say,
i say a few because you cant allways rely on what one says as some may have different views.

Most of the reviews for that one look good, and phillips are getting pretty great at making tv's, one thing all the reviews say is that it is great at saving energy and thats its power consumption is the lowest of all the HD tv's they have reviewed, which means you could watch more tv . heres one of the reviews i read so you can see what they say:

I did have a look to see what else you could get for that price and i couldn't find anything that good lol so it does look like a good buy, But dont take my word for it, ask around read reviews and see what else comes up in the january sales, because at the end of the day buying a tv now is more of a investment then anything else because there so expensive.

So have a look around and make sure you are happy with the one you chose and if you find one which is a bit more but has a lot more on offer just hold fire a while and save a bit more cash.

Oh just remembered LG make very good tv's so there something to look at, they make a lot of tv's for other companies, one of which being samsung. they also usually have a lower price tag then most of there competitors.

Oh and try to avoid sony's because theyve become like mk1 escorts and suffer from some major scene tax lol

Projector has certain issues for sure, but it is very nice when you can see picture easily from wall, I have difficulties to play Wii from tv as I'm so used to that +100" picture

Then its settled.
