We've had probably 3-4 inches down here.

Some people are giving their snowcaps the first real test I bet :)

And one would think that it gets colder up north

From Friday 3 inches extra here and it still slowly comes down, even few moments ago it did pour water at -5 which has of course some slippery consequences.

Germ you sure have got your priorities right :D

But colleges are shut because of tiny bit of snow? It must be very different situation in such country that has not prepared to snow at all.

We have very mild winter and you get very cold winter, looks like weather is equalizing, here it pours again water which is frozen right when it touches ground, car, about anything cold surface, making clear ice coating all over the place.

One day, not a single bus in London was running, because there were a few inches of snow. We have a very different attitude to the white stuff

That snow did what the Luftwaffe tried for yrs to do-ie stop transport around London.

Should have pelted us with snowballs rather than bombs

Listed to the Radio 4 News quiz per chance? - or did you just happen to come up with the same joke :P

Churchill will be turning in his grave that now some cold precipitation brings the whole county to a grinding halt...

Read it in the Times old boy.
The Times is where most of the Beeb's radio chat shows get their topics from-especially Jeremy Whine on R2.

You should send some official winter aware team to visit Finland and check how we deal with stuff, naturally this team would consists only the elite and best, in other words V3M members, 4 weeks of vac.. ehm. studying and government should pay that all + snowcaps to each one too.

So should I book a rooms already?

Salt degrades 10% p/annum-hence LA's are reluctant to stock pile it for an once a decade event.
All those people bangin' on about no grit/salt would be complaining twice as much when their council tax went up £20/month for a pile of grit/salt that may/may not be used.

Ergo the merry go round of whining is maintained.

Truth of the matter-most people in this country can't drive for $hit.
If people are that bothered buy a cheap set of chains and STF up.

Country folk never complain about the snow-up here they get it every year so know how to cope.

That salt is something I really don't like to see put on roads, it makes car rust really badly and really fast too, also it is really bad for enviroment, there are some alternative stuff too and it should work just as well, but is better in any other aspect.

If everyone just would have proper tyres, there would not be a problem, oh of course if people would be able to actually drive they cars and not just sit on driver's seat and hold squeeze that ring at front of them with their knuckles white. But that should be requirement for any weather, why such person is allowed to drive that can't drive? You are not allowed to do brain surgery either unless you can do it, so why it is allowed to do it with car to some unlucky bystander?

All down to silly "everyone has to have equal chance"-ideology that some seem to believe being ideology saving human race. I prefer "you make your own chances", that would be just fair to everyone, would force people to take responsibility of themselves and their actions too.

I don't like to generalize too much, but it is very clear which sex has origins of calling these kinds of 'standards' and we can draw graph that clearly shows point what has caused all kind of problems in traffic and also in other areas, like general lack of discipline.
It is sad, but so it seems to be.
