9 years in barn!

Post by Jaspersilus » 22 Feb 2009 11:52 am

Hi,
Im taking my 1988 360 GLT out of barn storage in the next couple of weeks, its only done 63000 miles, and last week with a new battery and a gallon of petrol it started first turn of the key.
All 4 tyres are very low though not flat, will these be OK, or will they have flat spots?
Im going the change the cambelt, and fresh oil in the engine, g,box and diff.
The brakes are rusted on and the tailgate struts have completely failed, it needs a good clean, but on thorough inspection the only rust on the car is a small spot on the sunroof and another spot on the leading edge of the bonnet, it still has the dealer stickers on the kick plates!
The heated seats dont work, it has a full volvo service history including the big 48000 mile service, I put a new exhaust on, and new discs and pads a few weeks before putting it in storage!
Oh and the 4 semi flat tyres are all new too!
Any advice about getting it back on the road would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers
Jason in Sheffield

A little while back i brought a motor back to life that had sat for 12 years, i drained the oil which had become the consistency of honey, but wasn't happy with what was coming out so i pulled the sump off, it had a sludge on the bottom about an inch thick and was blocking the oil pickup, if i'd just chucked in new oil and started it, it probably would have killed the motor.

I just read your thread in the VOC forum, very interesting :-)

I guess the most important thing will be getting the brakes done. The brake master cylinder on my Merc failed after it was left standing for "only" 9 months, so after 9 years there'll definitely be work that needs doing.

Brakes
Oil (engine (+ Volvo filter), diff, gearbox)
Coolant
Cambelt + tensioner
Tyres (check the age with the DOT Code on the tyre wall, after 9+ years they won't be much good)

possibly both fuel filters, air filter

and then see how you go! Tailgate struts, heated seats etc. can wait IMO ...

Hi mate.
To free up the back brakes, take the wheels off, take the drums off and spray a load off wd40 around the working parts.
Cheers Mark.
