Hi all,
Got to work on the car today at 8AM this morning,with alot of help from my minions .After a lot of hammering and unblolting, and a lot of swearing these are the results,The car is now ready for a touch of filler etc.I removed the plastic body strips from both sides now as I dont think new one to replace the damaged one is available.Although My panel beating skills are non existant ,I think I done pretty well straightening the door edge out and bringing out quarter panel.What you think?

LOL Tom,I just couldnt see the dents on car ,hence i didnt take nay pics of damage as it really wound me up.Asked number 2 son for hellp and he was more than happy to help,Roger pulled out his cleaning cloth told him no matter how much he cleans the damage is not going to go away

Nice to see you are getting some good progress with it. The damage is quite bad but at lest it is repairable.

Hi Guys,Progress on Tiffany has been very good so far,Every bit of time i get ends up being used on getting her back togehter again,Done some filling in over the last 2 days,I am trying to use as little filler as possible.So far the results are pretty good for my first ever attempt at bodywork,managed to get body contours just right,Now waiting for next bit of time to start sanding down the filler and apply so knifing putty.However I see getting the paint maybe a problem as so far I cant find any Volvo Bright Red (231) paint.You guys know anyone or anywhere that sells paint for 340?If I cant find any spray cans then I may leave car until summer and opt for the full respray option.

Code 231 is the same as my GLi ! Volvo may still sell it, you never know, it was quite a popular colour. My local car spares place still stocks it, the paint match was good (which is more than can be said for the recent Halfords' effort )

Just don't let primer on for very long, even over night could be too long if it does rain as primer let's moisture go trough it and result is rust very quicly. Very damp weather alone is quite bad in this.

Lacquer, white paint, black paint, rainbow colour paint, anything is better than leaving it primered, that was what my tutor told me when I was studying car repairing in one car repair shop.

My bodywork repairs seem to rust even I do make all precautions and clean metal as good as it possible, I even put rust converter stuff and still rust comes trough, so I don't know if you really should listen me

If you would live closer, I could offer my air brush to use, also here is one parts shop that mixes paint with code or to match your sample.

As Jani says mate, primer isn't waterproof, get some topcoat on. Most towns have a paint shop that will mix paint to spec, even to shades of fadedness in some. Yellow pages is your friend

Many thanks for replies guys,I will keep car under cover as much as possible.The more Filling and wet sanding I am doing them more I am tempted to take on other work on cars panels like the front panel under bumper which is also joined to wings I found some rot on it.Since I am at it may as well do it all,Having nieghbour who's worked in bodyshops for about 30 yrs helps alot even though he doesnt do the work but just advises and offers lemon marmalade sandwiches .

Forgot to mention I found a potential source for the body mouldings which i foolishly removed from both sides of cars,come in 5m strips for about £28,may consider fitting them back on.

About leaving primer exposed to the open air... It all depends on the primer used. Modern two-component (epoxy) primers aren't porous anymore, so when using them it doesn't matter that much. But it's more of a hassle if you're doing just small pieces at a time, because once you mix the hardener in, it's going to harden in X minutes whether you use it or not. So there's bound to be a lot more waste.

Pretty much everything that's sold in a spray can will be porous after drying, because the solvent in the paint has to go somewhere. So, painting many thin layers will help. Also some primers are better than others. Self etching primers are OK but not as great as epoxy, naturally.

I'm currently experimenting with different rust inhibition paints, but it's too early to tell any difference.

Body filler, on the other hand, is a completely different subject, and there will probably be as many opinions and advice as people. I generally wouldn't like to put filler directly on unpainted metal, if it's anything else than epoxy filler. Cellulose based stuff will be porous and absorb moisture, so it's like a time bomb under the top paint layer.

One of the few things Volvo still sells is the factory paint spray cans. Not cheap though, and you don't get much in a can. Fantastic work Mo.
