oh dear. paint damage.??!!!

Post by volvosneverdie » 15 Mar 2009 05:15 pm

Sunday afternoon.

Bored.

I know.

I'll de-badge the car.

I heard someone say a kettle of boiling water and a debit card'll do the trick. (cough! liam).

So i got cracking.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHH!!

the paints gone all wierd, white and looks like its marked.
Might be adhesive residue.
Give it a good scrub with warm soapy water and a stiff sponge.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHH!!
Now it really is Fu!ked.

if you wet the area, all looks fine. lovely even finish.
As it dries the area ive rubbed hard turns very white and many many teeny tiny scratches are visable.
It somehow also looks like its taken some tint off the rear lenses.
Would kettle water do that???!!!!

Help?

T-cuts been suggested............................................................................................

This is why i never try anything.
:(

Xylene is often recommended for removing glue, would that work?

oops , should have used a hair dryer , softens the glue and usually you can just peel the badge off with the glue , any residue I clean up with a bit of white spirit on a soft cloth , no abrasive cloths should be used on bodywork

Oh shit that is bad!

Dude water shouldn't do that! When I said I used the debit card i was being lazy man. Fishing line and a hair dryer are FTW. However I just stuck the card behind each letter and wiggled it up and down whilst pushing after the water had softened the glue and it came off no bother. Scrap yard (without tools) stylee.

The only marks left on mine were from the double sided tape, but obviously only where the badge had been. Mayeb yours have been reapplied at some stage dude?

Your white marks are mad mate! How rough was the sponge? It looks like you've scoured the finish somehow. I cant believe that, feel shit now. :(

It's faded like I expected under the badge, but if you were painting them like you said then it's ideal to line back up with.

Yeah, just decided to debadge altogether. On a whim. on a sunday afternoon.
Oops.

It was a rough sponge like.

The 'shaddow' you can see underneath, is actually adhesive still left on, which is what I was trying to get off.
Its wierd man, theres white residue on the bumper an all. where the waters ran off.

Gonna try and treat it with tar and glue valleting juice, and T-cut it I think.
(if this is a bad idea, someone please say so now!)

if that doesnt work, er dunno.

If there's white crap on the bumper too mate then surely that means the car was covered in some form of wax/polish and you agitating the area with the sponge has loosened it? Surely it's not the lacquer as it's appears white? T cut in moderation should be fine to remove the shadowing left by the badge aye.

Maybe a good going over with a machine polisher and possibly a fine cutting compound could be in order dude. I'm no valeter though. CBA with all this snow foam, two bucket, detail crap these days. 3 quid in the jet wash for the Lolvo and I'm laughin.

When the paint's wet can you 'draw' in the white stuff that's around the badge area? It looks like there's finger marks from you?

*edit not questioning you Adam. I was typing this albeit slowly at the same time lol.

Yeah, thats why i thought it was adhesive residue. Wipe a finger on it, and the fingermark literally turns to normal finish, then dries white. but finger mark shaped.

I know a valleter, not cheap mind, but might be worth the thirty quid to get a professional in eh?

You can do it with T cut by hand put what you really need is farecla G3, trade name is just G3
Its a buffing compound.
Prop is to get the shine back and to stay back you need to get heat into the paint. So a mahine polisher creates friction as it spins which gives a better finish.

Will he machine polish it for you mate? If so that's a bargain like, but I know what you man, needless spending etc. Next time chill with the sponge! :(

*edit Agreed a proper mop with G3 is the way like, if you shell out for that then she will have some serious summer shine too mate. Every cloud and all that. 340pw

Big sticker/badge FTW

I want one from a Globe Trotter truck or somethins saying LOLVO in 6 inch high letters lol

Dont even joke dude.

When it was just around the badge (before i gave it a PROPPER good rub  ), I actually thought f*ck it. Went into the house and got my 8Ball decal out.
That nearly covers it. that'll do.

But hang on, it might just clean off with a good scrub..................................................  :(

Rite to clear this up yeh?
If you wet it as a guess it looks perfect yeh? And as for your finger, your finger has enough natural oils in it to temporarily get the shine back.
Try it, go out and use some Tcut on a cloth and rub really hard and quite fast on a small area, trhen buff it back and see what happens. Trust me mate paint is hard as nails. It will be fine.
