Scrapyards aint what they used to be...

Post by workshopmanualman » 20 Mar 2009 07:04 pm

Went to buy some steel rims from the scrap yard today. Guy asked what car it was for; a 360. "That's an old 'un, won't have anything for that." And he kind of looked at me as a saddo for driving an old car. This is a scrap yard. Don't they deal in old stuff?

Anyway, as I was leaving I spotted a Ford Sierra Ghia. A 27 year old car. His. My car is 20.

Hi,

yeah they had like a 1,000 rims to fit, so no worries there. But I've found if you go in and ask for 4x100 etc. they have a failure to understand. "What car is it for?" Volvo 360 say I. "Aint got nuffink in for that. Old car that. What you need are 4x100 rims mate. Got loads of those."

They had 3 x 480's and even a Capri 280i in, but no 340/360's anywhere.

Old car innit!

The last time I found anything for a 300 in a German scrapyard was in 2000. Long time ago!

As you are in Surrey was this Pease pottage/ Bridges breakers by any chance? If not where please?

Just i know they had a 480 the other day, a mate and i sat in it to check the level of seat comfort, which as it turns out is very nice, so will be on the hunt for a nice set of front seats from one. Plus some Capri's.

They do get in 340/60's but not had any for a month or so.

It was Bridges. The 480's have been stripped pretty much to the bare shells, as was the Capri. Any interior fittings were either long gone, or junk being open to the elements. Picked to the bones. Suspect they'll be big blocks soon, as they are on the back lot awaiting the crusher. How did you manage to sit in any of them - the ones I saw were perched on top of other cars!!

Funny to have those but nothing more common, like the 300 or the 400 - but I bet they were crushed during the mad Chinese years. There is another breaker somewhere between Horsham and Dorking that may be worth a punt.

My memory is pretty poor at the best of times but it was only Tue or Wed that i went, the Capri was as you say well and truly stripped, but the 480 wasn't too bad. How did we sit in it? if it's the maroon one you mean on top of another car, well we just hoiked ourselves up using the car belows wing mirrors lol.

They did have 2 0r 3 440's on the right hand side as you walk into the back area bit.

Not sure of the exact location, but there was a breakers yard right near a railway crossing, but last time i went there, 2 months or so ago, they are purely metal recyclers now, they may take cars, but you can't get spares off of them.

There is also a small breakers in Dorking, right next to/opposite Dorking train station, not the massive one, the small one at the end of the high street.
