Modified Car Insurance
Modified Car Insurance
Hi All,
I have decided to try an insure Kermit. I have changed the log book for colour, but I need to change the cc as requested.
When I go online to get a quote, no one will insure me. I'm 24 full no claims, no convicitons, pass plus etc. But they seem to not want to know you. No it makes me realise why there's 1000's of people driving around with dodgy insurance, because they're too afraid to list their mods. I'm paying the price here of being too honest. A part of me thinks I should have left my car standart when going for a quote and just hope I don't crash!!!!
What advice etc can you give me. Those of you have changed your engine, what have you done. I'm not asking you to air it out on the net, just PM me or something.
Cheers me dears.

I take it you've tried Adrain Flux, they are pretty good normaly, i'm with them.
Or Footman james? I'm 27 so that may be the deciding factor, but that said Adam is younger and he declared all mods, he's probably the man to talk to.

Re: Modified Car Insurance
I had this problem last year, was also 24, but with 7 years no claims and I was pretty peeved, most wont touch mods until 25 (I was ~2 months away...)
Companies that *will* insure mods at 24 were Endsleigh, Flux, Footman James and heffalump. There are a few competition companies too, but again, if you don't compete with the car it's dodgy ground.

Re: Modified Car Insurance
Direct Line online didnt even ask me about mods, engine swaps or owt.
I have heard some undesirables in shady shadows suggest not reporting engine swaps. as insurance assesors are not mechanics, just number men, who asses damage only. So when you come to be inspected, they see a lump of engine.
Dont know how reliable that type of 'ignore and hope' policy would be, and i certainly would not condone it, but theres A LOT of folk rolling that way.

Re: Modified Car Insurance
The problem with not declaring mods though is with the fed's, i beleive they have powers to confiscate motors which aren't as described, it's risky ground basicaly.
Oh could try The Co-Op for insurance aswell, normally quite cheap.

Federales arnt mechanics either though.
Most dont know the difference between an f7p and a b200.
You could be unlucky and get a pull from one who does, and in my opinion, its just not worth the risk.
Re: Modified Car Insurance
My point exactly. If you happen to crash an injure someone, they WILL take the car away to be inspected my mechanical police (not robots). When Carlos Sainz hit a spectator on the RAC his car went away for ages. She ain't no standard 1.6 zetec I know.
I've applied to Competion Car Insurance, and for the record, I will be doing autotest in it so they can insure it, I hope. I just can't wait until I turn 25!

Re: Modified Car Insurance
Insurance companies will weasel out of any claim they can so not declaring mods is plain stupid.
Don't think you're giving assessors much credit here. Their job is to save the company money-reckon they'll know Volvo never did a twin cam 300.
You pays your money and ya take ya chance.

Re: Modified Car Insurance
you mentioned you do some motorsport garth
In which case david auden insurance all the way, I have my 106 rallye with them mods fully declared (and I mean everything right down to where I've run the brake lines!!!!) the policy costs me £350 and I'm 21... the only thing is mileage, as I'm on about 3000 road miles a year with unlimited event miles iirc.
The great thing about a rally policy is that they don't care about any mods, just want a list of what to replace if it gets stolen.

Re: Modified Car Insurance
Footman James did well for me.
A 'testing the water' quote on a 1.4 340 with 1.8 16v and lowered 2" came in at £430. I'm 27, it'll be kept on the road in a fairly shady area of Manchester. Compared to £600+ with Admiral (cheapest I could find) for the mid 90's standard 1.4 Polo I'm driving now, that's damned good! Although not as good as the £127 FJ quoted me if it was stock and garaged
Will have to try some of these other companies mentioned before I actually buy one..
