Volvo 360 GL Saloon (to be HÖRred)

Post by bodejodel » 09 Jun 2009 12:48 pm

Well, the HÖR is no more...

The first white saloon i bought was pretty bad too, so I bought another 360: a white 360 GL saloon. This car has hardly any rust, has a full Volvo dealer service history from when it was new. The previous owner traded in a 340 DLS from 1981 when he bought this car.
All it needs is a set of new shocks and a new timing belt. The Koni's of the HÖR will make a huge difference!
It's pretty stock right now, but I have a lot of goodies to make it better.

The evening I bought it:

Added fog lights, swapped the bumper hole covers for bumper vents, added rear seat belts and installed a new rear light cluster.

After an even closer inspection at home it still was an awesome find. A near perfect car with full service history is rare. It has only run 113.000 km so it is practically brand new! ;)
I'm not fully enjoying it yet because of the worn shocks, but that special 360 feeling has returned!
The Koni's, the HÖR lowering springs and blocks together with the already installed rear coils will solve that soon!

This fall I will have a friend of mine, who has a bodyshop, get rid of the tiny bits of rust and the car will undergo a full Dinitrol preservation treatment. They will wash out all the hollow spaces, spray them with some kind of rust eliminating fluid and then spray the hollow spaces and the whole bottom of the car with a protective coating. It will NEVER rust again!

The Koni's, lowering blocks and springs and the PAS will be fitted the 29th of june.
After the tiny bits of rust have been extinguished the bumpers will be swapped for some color coded examples and the work on the bodykit will start.

Oops... forgot to update here:

I installed some 15"ATS CUP rims with 195 road hugging Toyo Proxes T1R tyres.

The rims will be painted black/white in the futere, but this will do for now...
I also upgraded the soundsystem by 1000%.

Update!

Soon, 4 brand new, yellow Koni Sport shocks will arrive... Together with a full set of polybushes, a 40 mm drop and Dai's 25 mm sway bar they will improve the ride quite dramatically...
The front legs will be powdercoated Koni yellow, as will the round front beam, the coils from the HÖR and the aux springs in the back will be Dai-blue to match the sway bar. The other aux coil spring parts and some other bits will probably be coated yellow... SS brake lines are about to arrive too. It will look just as sweet as it drives...

After that, the brakes will be upgraded. Big disks in the front and disk brakes in the back... In time...

Shocks and bushes needed to be replaced anyway so I decided to do it the right way instead of using stock stuff.
The brakes and cosmetic stuff might take quite a while longer. I lost my job due to the crisis (I'm in the construction business) so I'm on a tight budget ATM... sm2

Jereon, where did you get the yellow Koni's dude? I've only ever seen red and thought those were out of production!

For the front, the 86-1919SPORT from the MK1 VW GTI should fit with some minor modifications.
I will know what needs to be modified within a couple of weeks.
For the rear, the rear shocks from an Alfa Romeo Guilia 80-1781SPORT are a straight fit... :D

For red Koni's, just remove the SPORT part.

I think they will be in production for a while because these cars are quite popular, so there will be new shocks available for the 300 with the lifetime Koni warranty!

A guy on the V3C board has a Volvo performance parts shop: http://www.performance-parts.nl and he is currently doing a group buy for the Koni's. He is offering a nice deal wich is quite a bit cheaper than the prices from the shop in the links above.
Should I check to see if he is interested in a cross channel group buy? The more he sells, the lower the price may be.

[EDIT]He is willing to ship to the UK, checking prices now...

there were specific 300 shocks made in koni yellow for the dutch DNRT cup cars for front and rear; but that was a custom batch and those are no longer available (and buying those secondhand after 6/7 years of track use is not a good idea)

the rear alfa's shocks are available in red and yellow, i have the yellow version of them under my 340Turbo

When I arrived I thought I could go right back home; the car looked lowreed already when face to face to Anjo's gutted 340T:

Inside, some goodies awaited me!

Even tha car did a "jump for joy" when he learned what we would mount to his underbelly:

Next project, Hydrolics!

I just couldn't wait and installed the sway bar a week ago, what a difference in handling from just the sway bar!
Image

We took all the old crap off of the car and you can tell it was just about time I changed the struts. They probably will be usable after a blasting session.

The assembled goodies waiting to be installed:

The most important tool when you instal Polybushes and suspension stuff:
Image

It does look cool doesn't it?
Image Image Image

The rear shocks took hardly any time, so I did not get to make a lot of pictures:
Image

I really like the stance!
Image

To show off my new suspension I really need to drive it into a ditch and roll over...

There will be more powdercoated parts finding their way on to the car in the future, but first I need to buy some food for my kids...
