I got another, too!

Post by nomead » 20 Sep 2009 08:20 pm

On Saturday I fetched myself a Volvo 360 GLT, 3 doors, dark grey metallic, driven a bit over 304 000 km, got original 14" alloys. MOT test runs out at the end of September but looking superficially at it there should be no big problems. I haven't had the time to look under the car yet, though. Maybe there's some surprises in store. Hopefully not. Some rust repairs have already been done, at least the left rear sill has been welded, and there are other dodgy bits here and there. So I don't expect a long life for it anymore. As a price level comparison, it was 600 euros. The original asking price was 550 but we agreed on a slightly higher price if the seller replaces a failed front wheel bearing.

It doesn't have that many extras. Front foglamps, rear spoiler, "GLT" on the steering wheel... slightly better seats than in my 340DL but still fabric covered. No electric windows, no central locking, no electric mirrors... 4-dial instrument panel, too. Stiffer, lower suspension but probably stock (normal for GLT). Wind deflectors on door windows.

The exhaust is somehow loose and rattles against the chassis or something, there's a loud noise at certain rpm, for example at idle. Also the valve cover gasket is leaking. All the door and rear window rubber seals are dead (stiff, non-elastic) and optimally should be replaced. I'll probably find lots more.

At first actually I wasn't too impressed about the performance, but this was mostly due to my driving skills. I've driven cars with automatic gearboxes for such a long time, and the manual-geared cars in my life had diesel engines. I just didn't apply enough rpm at first.

It's been a slightly hectic weekend so I have no pics yet. Soon...

im sure youve got a touch of the 'new car blues'.
you always notice all the faults first, then enjoy later.
Or I do anyway.

Sounds nice.
Must be a MK2 then?

pics please!

Well done you. I can't wait to see the pics when you do them. Good luck with it, but most of all, enjoy it! :D

Hey, another 3dr GLT in the family, congrats ... Look forward to the pics!

And don't worry about having no equipment. It all adds weight and slows the car down anyway ;-)

OK here are some pictures. Again the camera seems to make the car look better than it actually is.

Then some bad bits. There's a hole under the fuse box.

This is above the tailgate hinge. It would actually be a good picture for that "Rust in peace" photo competition, but a bit too late.

And yes, it's a RED block, underneath all that oil and gunk!

Yes, judging by the length of it, it's an antenna for the NMT450 network, predecessor of GSM. Very hot (and expensive) in the 80's.

You really need to watch that. After a while, it turns into this:

They do look nice in that metallic grey, same colour as my GL! Never seen such bad roof rot as that before, although mines got it just starting to come through, emergency treatment required!

I've already had mine welded in that area once ... after the rear hatch came away in my hands

Looks nice that, rear roof rot is scary though! I've only ever seen it that bad on Nessy (Foggy's 340DL) in this country before

How on earth does rust get a hold on the rear roof?
under the rear hatch seal?

The boot lid hinge is located inside the roof. There's a rectangular hole where the hinge goes, this hole will accumulate crud that will in turn gather moisture. Also the roof steel sheet is exposed from both sides through this hole, so it's more likely to start rusting there.

Anyway. Today I went to have my car tested. Didn't have time to do much to it, so I thought I'd go and get a list of things to fix. To my huge surprise though, the car passed the test with no remarks. The guy doing the test said that the shocks are getting a bit old, "you might want to change them soon" but didn't get a written note about it on the test papers. :o So, officially it's a roadworthy car again for a year. sm4
