360 GLT Saloon - reFUSE-ing to work + a new noise!

Post by Con2K » 03 Oct 2009 06:38 pm

A mate came over today which was a kick up the backside to get sum of the smaller things done to the car.

For those who CBA, scroll down for photo's

txt'd my mate for sum of the service items that should arrive in the week and in the meantime went and got the rest from halfords (Love my trade discount card lol)

Changed all the bulbs because I changed one and realised it looked much brighter than the rest - and again, the help of a discount card meant I didnt pay v.much for the stuff which is always a bonus and a motivator to getting things done.

So today I got:

Bosch HT Leads (No. 5 is nowhere near long enough to where it needs to go)
NGK Plus
2x Gen Volvo aux belts (came with car)
Battery Earth strap (that actually goes to the bonnet)
Extreme brilliance headlight bulbs and forglight ones
Full bulb kit for tail lights/indicators/sidelights etc
Interior lights including Heater panel (got green instead of clear so went bk and exchanged - still need an interior light unit tho)

Due to arrive mid week are:
New front number plate
Air filter
Oil Filter
Fuel filter
Do we have cabin/pollen filters???
Oil
Diff Oil
Gearbox oil (I was told its same as 10w40 engine oil???)
Dizzy cap and rotor arm
Gen Volvo Headlight wipers.

So lots to keep me busy anyway
Air freshener to remove the old person smell that has appeared since I started pulling bits off the dash etc.

Started off by adding some silicone to the front fog to fill in the big hole and stop water ingress damaging the new bulb. It'll do until it either starts to leak again or I come across a foglight lens. Also noticed the drivers side headlight chrome inside has completely gone so on the look out for a headlight now without bad pitting to the glass.

After doing the above list, removed the tape holder to reveal a v.v.dusty large centre console! Also pulled the dent out of the back door and put abit of work into the scratches to tidy it up until I detail the whole car properly.

Anyway - on with the pics. Really wanted to wait until it was machine polished and the enginebay steam cleaned to remove the grubby, mossy, leafy buildup that I cant get off.

Need chromeyness.

Scratch/dent - before/after

Engine bay - unclean! unclean!!

Rear headrests missing???

Out with the old...

Scratched rear panel in boot - nothing major.

Thats sum of the easy stuff sorted, now with 45psi instead of 20 that was in them all round! From cold it idles alot better with the new plugs and leads - shame I couldnt change the 5th one to the coil/injectionthing/where ever it goes - need to work out how to change diff/gear oil and once i'm happy it behaves itself day to day it'll be lowered when I get the parts together.

Oh, found this wire behind the radio to the top right of the recess not plugged into anything...
Image

...any ideas?

Looks pretty tidy that, normaly not a fan of red cars but it looks spot on on a saloon GLT.

Have you done the heater bulbs yet, i need to do mine but imagine it would be a proper PITA so have done without so far :D

Lots of original accessories there :) I've got the same radio ... except with FM reception ;-)

What's the twiddly thing next to the fog lamp switch?

Here's a pic of the heater bulb socket, dangling next to the clock. You remove the radio, and the currogated panel above it, then you can get to the bulb socket (stuck into the heater panel somewhere near the fan switch IIRC)

Aye, I think it looks really smart in red too. Reminds me of the bodykitted GLT's I used to see which were nearly always red for some reason iirc.

I thought changing the heater panel bulb in my mk2 was a right carry on lol. There is no need for that steel panel! lol

The twiddley knob next to the foglamp switch is to fade to the rear speakers (fade to the front u press the volume control in) so I have 4 way control. (Only 3 work)

Speaking of fogs, my fronts have stopped working, fuse is fine and new bulbs yesterday working fine for an hr or so....

Done heater panel - as described above - remove radio unscrew heater panel - push down and get sum1 with small hands to pull out the bulb (there is only one 'CLEAR' bulb - I bought green tint ones and had to go bk and change them.

Just one tip about uping the tyre pressures,if the tyres are old over inflating them can instantly lead to the inner tyre wall malshaping or worse exploding! And yes I am speaking from experience( 70 mph read. Low out on the m25 fast lane)definatley due to my over Inflation of my 1989 tyres!

Thanks for that Con2k i may well give my heater bulbs a go, but i quite like my non rattle-y dash as it is, i'm sure if i take it apart it'll start making noises lol.

Checked the fuse box mate - still got a connection but they seem to be original. The fogs were working when I bought it, changed the bulbs with like for like (just new) and working fine also. But I left them on by accident for about 30mins one night, turned them off and later tha night tried them again and nothing happened. Havent checked the filamnets yet. Will do midweek.

As for tyre pressures, its just a local car mate, if I do any substantial driving i'll lower the pressures, but atm the rears are up for a purpose 340pw

I removed my radio and the metal panel between in and the heater panel - unscrewed the heater panel and pushed it down by only a couple of inches and it went back up perfectly fine, no 'new' rattles lol

Trabitom99 - Same radio as mine but with FM - how jealous am I!!! atm I may have to settle for one of those tape adapters plugged into my mobile to pickup FM radio!!! CBA to fir an aftermarket headunit yet. Car doesnt get used enough.

Liam - u know how much I HATE red - but actually, it really aint a bad colour. I wanna polish it up sumtime. Think it'll make a huge difference. Will be getting a valet shortly too if I get sum cash together and a steam clean at the same time. Then lowering.

Done a total of 123 miles in the car now - no motorway miles yet and alot of short journeys so cant really comment on fuel consumption.

Some new problems discovered: Replaced the ashtray bulb (again) and it blew (again) not sure why but so fiddely to get to i'm not too bothered.

The Fuel Low warning light doesnt come on.

Foglights still dont work, changed fuses (even tho they looked fine) for working ones and still no good, still havent removed bulbs (the most obvious thing to do)

On the plus side, I think the car had a cambelt changed at 34800 miles (now on 66900) unfortunately that was May 1997.

Also got some genuine Volvo wiper headlight wiper blades. I know it was a rip off at £8 for the pair but they are genuine and new and easy to fit. All good. (well it was till I showed the missus how they clip on and snapped the clip - v.v.f*cked off so now need a tidy condition headlight wiper arm with the plastic clips that hold the metal peice of the wiper blade in place :( )
Anyway, here's before...

Fitted a new rear window sticker - Or rather a mate did without me spotting!

Looks like a good car. Hope mine looks that good when its finished.

You seem to have the wrong/non-volvo exhaust, it should point directly backwards, the non-Volvo stuff is the same from the shorter hatchback and do not fit the saloons properly (this is why they have a separate pipe). The last GLT saloon I had a 340 1.7 exhaust bodged on, really sapped the power. A proper Volvo exhaust kit is very satisfying to put on and they really last, excellent VFM.
