UK breaker prices, request

Post by jtbo » 12 Dec 2009 04:20 pm

My french crap would need a new bumper, however those are priced something insanely high around here, costing 200 or more. So I was wondering if it would be any cheaper to order one from UK breaker, however I fail to find any of those offering online service.

So I thought that I ask here if anyone would be so nice to ask what would front bumper for 1997 Citroen ZX Monaco cost there, but only if someone is going to salvage some other parts, so you don't need to do extra trip there.
I presume parts are same even steering wheel is another side of car.

Then there is always a shipping costs, which are probably insane for such parts, can anyone throw any estimates? It is bit hard to know what such thing weights and as it is big and difficult shape part it is of course quite expensive to ship, but bloody 200 is ripoff, something like 100ish would be tops from such part.

Colour is dark red metallic, but it is not so important, I can always respray it.

Prices wouldn't be expensive at all... upto 50 for the bumper here - depending on breaker ofcourse, but they are quite common over here in scrapyards. Plus shipping... I think thats what will really make it expensive :( Plus who knows what condition it will arrive to you in!

That sounds cheap, also we have additional problem here, I could find only 3 bumpers from whole country, that might get prices high. ZX is so new model (finnish new that is, we tend to use cars until they don't run, brown stuff is repairable  ) that most that are at breakers are just crashed and quite often it is front damage.

But indeed shipping + possible damage in shipping might be a problem, which need further investigation. Thx from price info bit :D

There is always good old eBay as lots of people seem to specialise in used bumpers. As stated though, shipping may well push the price to near where you are now anyway.
I blame the Volvo 66 estate I had......

Shipping would probably kill the idea as anything over 1.5m long is "out of gauge" and usually surcharged / not accepted.

What you need to do is arrange a holiday for these things ;)

If you take an average bumper and wrap it properly to avoid damage, I think it will. I had this problem trying to send a GRP front bumper/bib spoiler for a Mini to Australia.

Should made road trip there to get part, would be easiest, however would require quite lot of money and I really don't have time for vacation, unfortunate.

This site offers new bumper for £76, lot less than in here, if I would drive over then I should collect such part.

I have not been able to find any place here where to get new bumper, only 3 used ones in whole country.

There are plenty of ZX bumpers on German Ebay:

This guy will give EU postage quotes on request:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 0278237260

and this seller is asking 70 Euros to post to FInland:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie ... 0417635098

It'd interest me to know how they post their stuff - the cheapest place I know for sending bulky things is GLS Germany, but they only send up to a "maximum Gurtmass" of 3 metres, this works out as 2 x height + 2 x width + 1 x longest side. That's just about OK for a spoiler, but I had a quick look at a V300 bumper of mine in the cellar and that would be way bulkier than that ...

Cheers

Thx Tom, there seem to be quite nice selection, too bad my car bumper is one from better models so it is 80-100 euros in that list, however I need to examine listing bit more carefully, I might have missed some :D .

I have no idea if that different looking version fits, it has some differences for example plate location and shaping, perhaps I ask from our local Citroen board if they would know about swapping bumper to other model. This car has also airbag so that must have some additional challenge to process.
