Not seen this before

Post by Ian Mac » 15 Dec 2009 02:23 pm

My latest 340 (1987 1.4 DL) has a recirculation button on the heater panel which closes a flap via a vacuum valve in the engine compartment. This is my 10th 340 and I've never sen this before so I'm guessing its not a common fitment?

I also notice that my car doesn't have the additional courtesy light above the ignition switch - just a square hole in the fascia and no sign of wiring. Also the interior light doesn't operate from the front passenger door and on closer inspection there is no sign of a switch on the A post or any evidence of one having ever being fitted :?

My 360 GLE only operates the interior light from the drivers door.
But I do have the ignition courtesy light. :?:

Bens is the same as mine, and FJ's 3dr GLT has the recirc flap. Truely a thing of wonder. 8)

Recirc button was on 87 and earlier cars and usually the ignition courtesy light is a GLE/GLT kinda option or late 340 models too maybe?

Its mainly for when you're sat in traffic - it shuts out exhause fumes etc. It also aids demisting from cold as it circulates the warm air inside the car rather than drawing cold air from outside. If you leave it on for too long though it will cause heavy condensation and you'll probably suffocate due to oxygen starvation... :(

Ah, the recirc button! It's something that has been fitted for a short period of time I guess, the last batch of 340's (1990 and 1991) have missed out on the 'Bulgarian-road-tunnel-knob'.

The ignition courtesy light is a standard feature on the GL or above.

True. It was introduced for the '85 model year, and dropped with the '88 MY except on A/C cars. When we fitted my car with A/C the heater box had the "recirc flap". Unfortunately, only after refitting the dashboard did we notice there was an air leak somewhere in the switch, or in the piping just behind the switch, and I had to disconnect it at the manifold end to stop the hissing noise ...
