Re: volvo 340 1.9 turbo diesel
is that an electrically operated dumpvalve?
and what are you doing with the brakeservo?, original 1.6 diesel has a specific vacuumpump for it installed

never botherd with the dump value atm but will soon and yehh its a runner
Re: volvo 340 1.9 turbo diesel
Crap that's a big turbo! What's the predicted bhp output of this?
I realised my dad's S40 has a F9Q engine in it which packs quite a punch! Diesel daily is a good possibility unless I do the LPG thing...

Re: volvo 340 1.9 turbo diesel
S40 is really not so hot in diesel, hot even the HP model, mummy has one, but I would say that in practice my french crap gets up to speed about the same way, 10.6s for 0-60, but best is pulling from 60kph with 3rd gear where it really gains the speed because of torque (200Nm @2250rpm).
It looks like indeed big turbo, will be interesting to hear how it behaves when not at full boost, that might be sometimes bit of a challenge.

Nice work! The later 1.9D from 2001 I think onwards in 115bhp form should be pretty fast too with 260nm... wonder if that'd fit too?

Interesting to see how this pans out. Are you planning to use a standard prop or a steel one?
cheers

Re: volvo 340 1.9 turbo diesel
What clutch combination did you use as the 400 series clutches have different number of splines on the friction plate than the B172. D19 clutch is also has a stronger pressure plate than the petrol 400s. I believe though the splines are the same number on the JC5 (D19 400 gearbox) as the petrol variants (MC is Volvo name but they are derived from the JB and JC family). On 480 club europe there's a lot of chat about uprating the B18 turbo clutches. I guess beyond even the D19's output. That is, if the JC5 and the petrol boxes have the same splines?
There was a chap on V3M from way back when the site first started from London with a 1.7 turbo. I recall he worked at a Renault tuner in London and just for laughs left the 340 turbo looking stock. I recall he had some contacts for bespoke solid propshafts.
What turbo is that? Isnt the standard one?
Most interesting that the mounts for the block are the same as the B172. That still questions why the 440 diesels got bespoke engine mounts (engine hangs from above cambelt and gearbox onto the inner wings) and thus bespoke bodyshells compared to the 400 petrols.
Nice work!
I was considering building a 480 diesel but was put off by the fact the 440/460 diesels have such different mounts to the petrols.
It seems now that would be quite do-able?
The D19 is a superb engine and gets 50mpg in town and 70mpg on a motorway run. I thought I'd worked out the M-way figure wrong as it seemed so good but then I checked the extra-urban official figures
On a side note, I've not yet seen a 400 series engine which doesnt have leak in the area of the oil pump or auxilliary shaft housing and at the base of the cambelt pulley area. Even my friends B172 340 leaks exactly there.
Anyone know the source commonly? I'm thinking, given the location and the higher point of the oil that's its the aux shaft housing.
From your recent work, the aux housing has a rear main type seal for the shaft but is there also a liquid gasket used on the housing itself where it meets the block? I note the sump is sealed with white liquid gasket.

if a was to sell the car what would people offer for it
Re: volvo 340 1.9 turbo diesel
Depends on the standard of work, condition of the shell... if both are good you might get £800

oh come on man, nearly a finished project; very unique for the 300 series to use the 1.9TD and you practically post that you're building it to put it up for sale

Re: volvo 340 1.9 turbo diesel
Hello everyone.
Any news on the spec questions as above regarding the clutch for this D19 340?
I guess no one else is seeing this common oil leak on the B172 and B18 families? Every B18 family engine I've seen has an oil leak in the area of the auxilliary shaft. Leak is higher than the sump but also the crankshaft front seal is dry when checked. My friends B172 also has the same leak. D19s I've see have been the worst for this leak.
Is the auxillary shaft cover sealed with liquid gasket originally or with a paper gasket?
thanks
