My new 360

Post by SteveP » 31 Jan 2010 04:28 pm

Well I finally got another one of the bloody things   Some of you may already know the car as kwacker was selling it on here... I nearly bought it when the original owner was selling it but was being overly picky, as it's pretty much lovely. It's an 84 GLS B19A with 45k miles, full history, first owner for 25yrs etc etc. Bit of rust on the front corners of the wings, but not much elsewhere - by far the cleanest I've owned for sure.

There are a couple of things that have shown up on the 100 mile trip back. The rear suspension seems overly firm... maybe the shocks aren't shocking any more/or as much as they should? There's sometimes a little hesitancy when accelerating hard, but after an initial hesitancy it pulls like a train. The engine kinda seems reluctant to rev, dunno if that's just the way these things are though and I think would benefit from some adjustment on the top end as it sounds a little tappety when revving. Oh also, the manual rack feels pretty horrid - haven't checked the condition of the steering damper but it's very vague at the straight ahead position.

But it shot up the motorway for 100 miles between 60-80mph without issue and it's quiet for one of these things! Plans are a set of Leo's and a Mk2 GLT rear spoiler and sort out the above issues!

Pictars! (that's not rust on the sills/doors - it's greasy marks of some sort, looks like out of the doors/door shuts)

VERY nice - I'm almost jealous!

The hesitency and reluctance to rev could just be low dashpot level in the carb, but at least it sounds as if all the problems are minor - even the stiff susp could just be because it's been sat. Give it a stage 1 tune and a decent Italian Tune Up and it should be fine - there's not that much that can go wrong on these!

Enjoy it, and if you mistreat it or break it I will break you and mistreat Michelle!

Check tracking, wrong amount of toe could give a vague straight ahead as well as a steering damper.

Does look pretty gorgeous though mate!

Congrats, Steve, that car's had your name on it for a long long time ... It looks lovely! Do you still have those wheel rings? Might be an alternative to Leos ... A Smiths' econometer and amb temp gauge would go down well in the dash too - I really like those Smiths dials with the 8k rev counter ;-)

I'm undecided about the spoiler, if I'm honest. It suited your old 343 perfectly, but that had a lot more "matt blackness" about it whereas this looks like it's more of a "chromey" car. Even the tow bar's got chrome on it ;-)

Slam it, weld it, drift it

Good stuff getting back into one of the old barges and it does look a rather tidy example, hopefully it will serve you well and give you many many trouble free miles of ownership.

Haven't checked the carb oil level yet... pretty much just drove it back! Will get on the case with that tomorrow if its still light when I get back from work. Getting used to using a choke is also proving a fun one

The smiths gauges are excellent, and driving it tonight they light up much better than the VDO instrumentation.

I know what you mean about the rear spoiler Tom, I was wondering whether to fit it as well... but the rear end is just missing something without one I think. Problem is I don't reaaaally like the chrome. I even think a GL grille (black centre, chrome surround) looks better  By the way, I posted the stereo pic just for you

That car looks in great condition, the black marks on the sills might be dirt and dust sticking to residue of wax-oiling treatment coming out? My green GLS has exactly the same, not really sure what it is yet.

Lovely car, and a good purchase no doubt. I almost went for this last year when advertised on autotrader. Early days I know, but if you ever want to sell it on... :)
