Well, I don't know, maybe it is dying? It runs ok when warm, does smoke and run bad only when cold.

Are the glow plugs (or whatever they're called) in good working order? Are the valve clearances correctly set?

Yep to both of those, it start perfectly, runs about 1 minute (after glow perioid or whatever that is) and then it starts acting up, right at very moment when after glow shuts off. Valves has been adjusted, fuel filter replaced and all that should be very top condition. Some 180K miles driven.

Funny thing is that it pulls well even idle is like that, right when I ease on clutch so that engine gets some load it settles and purrs properly, no need to rise rpm. However if I rise rpm without engine load it runs on 3/2, starts running with all 4 after few mins, but that problem has gotten worse quite rapidly as now it is right on edge of stalling in cold weather, but that occurs only after 1 minute of running ok and it fixes itself after few mins.

This puzzles me and seem to be that not many people know about this kind of issues as thing is diesel.

Arrrr the good old XUD9TE absolutely loved mine in my 306.

Take it all your timing etc. is fine? Spose it can't be that badly out if at all as I know how temperamental these are to engine timming. Have the injectors ever been tested/cleaned? If they haven't been done in 180K+ i'm sure they could probably do with it by now

I think injectors are original state and timing belt was replaced when I did bought damn thing, so I have no clue about timing.

One thing I know that it is adjusted for economy, in smoke test value was something like 0.23, don't know if you have even similar tests/numbers there, but my Volvo is above 1 and is allowed to have something like 3, I guess this car is allowed to have 1.5 or something like that.

Pump is in original state too, setting is what it has been, so of course proper tune up + service of pump and injectors would be good idea, albeit rather costly, currently I have probably not possibility for such option.

I did read from 306 site how to adjust pump for go, however as it is Lucas pump I doubt my abilities to perform such operation, with Bosch pump things would be so much easier :D

It does pull rather ok, not very sporty, but goes as well as any modern car, power is all out before 4000 rpm however, shifting around 3500 seems to provide best acceleration, which I think is bit low.

It could be quick car with few mods, but as it is daily workhorse I just try to run with low cost line here, even I'm doing some soundproofing to it, but it is only as my ears don't take all that noise too well :lol:
