Food shortage

Post by jtbo » 18 Apr 2010 04:46 pm

So I read that:
If flight disruptions continue into this week there will be a shortage of some food products in Britain, which normally come in by air from east Asia and Africa.
http://www.volcanolive.com/news.html

Now I think that what an earth might be such product that would not come by train from spain/france and I can't think of any, enlighten me? :D

PS. Cover your cars, wiping off ash is much worse than wiping off sand from windshield and paint, also it may be slightly acid when it rains, that is what I did read

Bananas! Don't forget we can sustain ourselves fine in the UK by ourselves but we choose to import because it's cheaper.

Hmm, that is not much of shortage, imo. Now who would eat bananas? Them are bad for your weight and health, kinda like eating candy

Our country has given up being self sustained, some stuff we produce way too much and some we don't produce to survive one winter of isolation, weird.

There was some island country that did rely completely to water supply from other places, that is quite risky, imo.

Anyone needing some snow? We got more today... :?

Did you know that at least in Finland there is no law that makes cannibalism illegal? Killing someone sure is illegal, but if someone gives permission that you can eat him it is okay when he dies by law. Norms of society are then different thing, but it was kind of surprising that it was not illegal by law, might same in your country too.

Certainly you have there cow or two to eat before needing to get into cannibalism? I have heard rumors that some Britons might even be pretty proud of their agriculture and most likely rightfully so :D

Had to Google that:
In some countries (including UK) if the person being eaten makes the incision themselves and doesn't die as a result then no law has been broken.

So you can safely step out from the closet now

You know what, we got a real food shortage in here now.

There have been major strikes accross this country and currently situation is such that there are no meat at all in shop, no any bread, not even those microwave lunches, even frozen stuff is almost not existing, mostly ice cream is left.

I'm now completely lost what to eat as there just simply is no meat, man can't survive long without meat, actually there is only some flowers and some odd stuff (like olives in liquid etc, have never bought such and can't see why anyone would, I guess that is why those are still untouched) left in shop.

Current strike ends late at tuesday and will take several days until food products reach all shops, but more will come, next week when at earliest new products are again arriving they start it again and it will be even longer that time. At this time of year there is nothing even growing outside so this means that at latest during weekend situation has gone so bad that I will be starving if current predictions of shop owener are going to happen.

This has been really bad time since Christmas, power blackouts several times a day, sometimes lasting whole day, boss have no work to offer to me one now ex employee tried to sink whole company by purposely failing at selling, freezer and fridge broke and now even truly serious food shortage (luckily not quite the level they have in Africa, but closing that), it is real suffering here and all they care is saving climate by creating new taxes, I really feel that this is pushing limits...

To be fair I haven't noticed any difference in food supply at the local Citymarket or any larger markets in Helsinki-Vantaa area during the strikes and the employer declared lock-out. Must have a stronger influence in smaller cities/towns.

Even the fresh meat and fish have been available from the meat and fish counter.

Though I didn't go to shop today so I don't know the latest situation. Could have changed because of the on going employer declared lock-out.

That is only because they limit supplies to small shops so that people in city can have all the luxury while people at country are starving

Even shopkeeper did not understand how there can be stuff in big city, but she can't get anything, only answer they give is that because of strike there are no supplies available for delivery, so where that stuff comes to those huge Citymarkets ?

No single meat product were available today, no fish or chicken either, no can food. I got some flowers, maybe I can make something up from that, but really, these real world problems are here kept hidden under carpet by making sure big cities and such get all the supplies, it is worse censorship and manipulation than in China.

30km to any small shop instead of that tiny Sale and no transportation except a bicycle, I'm not going to cycle through those huge hills in storm winds that are currently blowing here, besides at morning here we had -9C and it is still not too warm out there, if I would not die because of exhausting, cold would surely get me

Honestly, why it is that all difficulties happen all at once?

edit: I don't know if I did mention, but there is no petrol at petrol station, it has been out of petrol for quite a time already.

Situation has not improved in local shop, but it is about turn worse as strikes are growing bigger, there are probably effect to even biggest shops.

Also there are news which claim that this situation might cause beer to run out at summer, also some other long term effects in availability of products.

This is outrageous, situation is probably worst since the war in shop here, in age where we have everything more than anyone could imagine during war, here still have to be such fights that cause major disruptions to people's lives, has it been too long that we have had all this luxury so that it have to be wrecked with this kind of stupid actions?

Still at the same time, there are hundreds of people without living quarters, I can't even say how wrong this situation is.

I still have some WW2 ammunition, if I just could find a rifle, I would find some moose to take down, there would be plenty of delicious meat. I'm having vision problems, hands are shaking etc. because I have to eat stuff that I'm not used to, there is constant rejection effect going on, it is also wrong to put people go trough all that because of some other people have some minor differences in their views.

People of this country are so tame that they will not do such thing.

But that is why we make good material for rally drivers, we are so tame people that we don't even blink where other people screams for their lives, it just would not do, there is job to do, win the cup, so that is only thing that tiny brain of rally driver is able to understand.

I have been eyeballing lorries that pass buy, when I see cooler unit I mark it to my book, some night, some place, they will left it unguarded and then I will get my meat

Revolution would be quite stupid as government really hasn't got anything to do with the current situation. :P Food workers are on strike because they can't get their version of the collective labour agreement accepted by the employer side.

Strikes are "side effect" of a democratic state, though my personal opinion is that it's totally idiotic to go on strike in the current economic situation of the world. People should be happy to have jobs in times like these.. Of course there are two sides, employees and employers but most of the times employees demands regarding the collective agreement seem to be ridicilous in the current economic state.. Everyone want bigger salaries.. I think that lower salary and a job is better than a business in bankrupt and no jobs for anyone?

I'll have to start ordering food straight from the producers.. :D I know lot's of people who own farms etc... because I study at Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry at the uni so many of my friends there have farm background..

Though because of the health regulations nowadays it's not as simple task to buy anything straight from the producer, if you would do it by the book.
