I recently discovered that another Volvo 340 Variomatic lives near me. It's a Mk2 X-reg, still being used most days but it is thought that it needs a new diff. The symptom is a "clicking and clacking" sound. They seem sure that the half shafts and pulleys are OK.
The owner does not have ready access to the web, hence me putting this note on.
If anyone (in the UK) can help with a replacement diff, that would be appreciated.

you'll need to swap the complete rear end of the variomatic; if you want to change the diff, don't use a 343/345 vario though!!

I have a complete primary and secondary transmission, still fully assembled with 'like-new' genuine volvo belts, sitting here gathering dust!

Yes, it is a nice one to save - 340 GL 5 door in dark metallic red, red interior and sliding metal sunroof (though I understand that is jammed shut).
The family (lady of the household) I think inherited from a parent many years ago, so are emotionally attached to it, plus the fact it is the only car that she really likes driving. They tell me that when it is on the go, it still goes very well indeed, but as we say, there are the click clacks from around the transmission. The husband has been using regularly recently for commutes of 30plus miles and more.
They use a non-Volvo mechanic who seems competent generally and it is him who is convinced it's the diff. Personally I am still not convinced that is the issue, and hopefully they will get it to an independent Volvo specialist in Nottm that they and I have used in the past, who seems to understand the Vario.
I just hope they don't give up on this car though...
