desperatly seeking exhaust manifold!
Well if the car is still there I can try and take it for you, the yard is usually cheap so it should be friendly on the wallet...
EDIT: though there is a good chance the car may not be there, it's been in there a while and the yard has a relatively quick turnaround.

Krista can we just clarify a couple of things? Cos reading your posts and Micks post before they seem to contradict each other.
He posted up that the downpipe had a hole in it just below the manifold and now you've said that the manifold has a hole in it. Is there any chance you could look at it again and just clarify where the holes are.
Its just that the downpipe is quite a flimsy metal and could quite easily rust away, whereas the manifold itself is quite a hefty bit of kit and doesn't easily develop holes. Its more likely to crack before it rusts through and tbh a 1.7 NA engine doesn't generate enough heat to crack one. Its more of a turbo engine thing IMO.
Anyway, is there any chance you can look at it again and possibly take some piccies so we can see what we're looking for.
The reason I ask is because we had this problem several years ago. Took the car in for a diagnosis and the dealer said it was a cracked manifold. 250quid + 1 hours labour. Took it home to take it apart. All apart and found nothing wrong. Only after we put it back together did we see the real problem, a huge crack in the downpipe. This was a Volvo main dealer btw and it was the workshop foreman who came out to look at it

Have you tried Silverlake in Botley? They usually have a 340 or 2 hanging around, and you could stop off there on Friday
I really can't believe you're having so much trouble!

Don't misunderstand me, I'm not being deliberately awkward. In fact, you're not a million miles away from me (I'm in North London) so I'm quite happy to come over and help you fix it.
I'm just trying to see exactly what the problem is. I edited my post above to recount my story of going to a main dealer and them misdiagnosing the problem. Exhaust manifolds are made of cast iron and therefore are pretty rust resistant. It could have cracked as I said in my post before, or actually there could be a gasket leak from there too.
