1983 y reg 1.4
help ive got a 340 1.4 1983 the mot has failed due to a part i cant find ..the car has only 39k on the clock so seems a shame to scrap it now .
the part is a reduction valve that sits on the n/s inner wing volvo part no 3298352 it has 4 pipes going to + from master and slave cylinders any help would be great to avoid it going to the volvo heaven everyone i try has newer versions in scrappys that is different or go to volvo part supplier that says part is now obsolete 01506853515

Evnin all, Macs awake.
Pressure reducing valve - as it says on the tin it reduces pressure to the rear brakes to avoid premature lock up under heavy braking (and the ususal result of terminal oversteer).
Ignoring the very early Girling braked cars (twin pot calipers up to chassis no. 377183 - 1980) there are two basic types.
Up to 1985 models (ATE brakes with 8" Bendix servo) there are two part numbers - 3298352 for MT cars and 3293421 for CVT cars. (360's have the same as 340 manual cars even though they have 9" drums rather than 8").
From 1986 (ATE brakes but with 9" Isovac servo) the part nos. change to 3202404 for all manual cars and 3202403 for CVTs.
The differences valve to valve are differing reduction factors and operating pressures with manual cars having a red/ratio of 0.30 and an operating pressure of 3000 kPa. For CVT cars the values are 0.45/2500kPa. There are slight differences in later valves (after 1986) to allow for the greater assistance of the larger servo - BUT the later valves whilst fulfilling the same function are physically different and are not directly interchangeable.
An early car could be "re-plumbed" to take a later valve but unless you are a very confident diy'er I would not suggest you tackle it.
For a 1983 car you really need a valve from a 1981/82/83/84 or 85 car with the same transmission as your own (although MT/CVT could at a pinch be "swapped").
Do try not to scrap for want of a valve though - one will turn up from somewhere.
Hope this helps - Mac.

If the worst comes to the worst, a universal brake bias valve could be used, but I'm confident a direct-swap unit can be found.
If a tidy car risks being scrapped and you've no-where to store it, there are options...
cheers
