does sound a tad expensive, Have you asked jon?
jon-ovlov wrote:I've got access to a lathe, so with the right dimensions and drawing could have them done by next week. I (probably) won't be able to take mine off my car to measure up, so if possible, could you give me a third angle projection or similar of the cups? Means I can get them accurate then, and won't end up wasting your time making the wrong ones!
Afraid I don't think I'm in the know enough to help in the manufacture but will definately take a few sets when they are made.

Do you need any more measurements, I have a spare mount in the shed - cups aren't perfect but are there

I'd press them, its only 2mm steel so easy to do. Much simpler/cheaper as milling on a lathe. You just need to get the basic plate laser/water-cut and fab up 2 simple moulds.

It might be a good idea, but it involves 2 more steps of item design, 4 more parts to make and certain engineering knowledge. But I enjoy a challenge :)

Have you looked at what is already out there like the cup washers on the Mini or on Land Rovers? Worth a try

Tried internet, but not a scrappie, very hard to find scrappies here these days. Found a Triumph item, but too small, also skate boards but again too small.

Is something to think about, maybe inspect work car park, bit cold at the moment though lol.

Another mount has lost it's bush cups on my car now. As a cheap bodge, how good would just finding a bit of tube the right size, cutting it down to say 20mm and welding that on? Surely would work better than what I'm driving on at the mo?

Yeah, its not a bad idea, welding together bits that are easier to make. You would want to keep the seperation of the rubber the same, and replace the bottom of the cups aswell, otherwise you are changing joint characteristics.

I have a few good ones of these, the one set should be available, i know i had one of the last pair of these from volvo sweden a few years ago. Im modifying a rusty pair to run modified lower suspension arms so wont cut up the good ones i have.
What i will do is take some good measurements and see if i can get some press tools made up to use in a basic diy press.
i think pressing them would be cheaper due to the wasted material of machining them.

I've one good large one, so measurements of the small one would be good. The machine guys are too used to charging big money. A press tool would seem to have a quick payback, but I think 2mm is pretty heavy for pressing at home, the smaller one is thinner, I guess about 1.3mm.

You can hammer 2mm sheetmetal into shape so a small press (5 or 10ton) should to the trick fine

I was thinking a M10mm screw thread up the middle of the tool, who has a press? Would have been handy for rear wheel bearings. I'd say you need 100 or so hammer strikes for the big washer, that would add up to alot to do in one go.

Shed sized presses are about the same size to decent sized ones, Clarkes do some hydraulics for not silly money.

If you are doing a hand draulic one (this sort of thing http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/punch-die ... s/4778814/ note RS suggests operation as hydraulic but the picture clearly shows a thread operated tool, this one shows and lists as hand http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/punch-die ... s/4778836/ ) then depending on the quantities you are looking at you will probably need to harden the metal die if you are cutting too, there was a good article in Model Engineers Workshop somewhere in the early issues about making punches, rather than moulds for a press. Should be easy enough to calculate the max force applied by a set of metric fine threads before the threads fall off the bolt ;)

Wish my lathe was working, this would be a fun project to try to make.

I have a hydraulic 20ton press that i made if i get round to working it out i will get some dies made and have a load of discs water jet cut that way im only forming the cups not cutting them out.

Materials bought, including material for die's. Have friend with lathe, just have to finish the design and get you guys to sign off. Have paper scribble trying to do on Librecad, but starting fresh.

Have friend with friend with press (apparently), but hoping M12 thread will generate enough force. Thinking 2mm plate might be a bit much, and might even break the tool with a 10mm wall.

So for the large cup I recon the following are key dimensions

Inner press size D54mm
Outer press size D60mm
Height difference 6.5mm (excludes material thickness)

Would appreciate if any can confirm with measurements, you should be able to see the indents from the original press.

Google sketchup works quite well for turned parts, and has been enhanced since I last tried to make the parts turned instead of the tool
