PROPSHAFT!

my propshaft ate itself yesterday in the middle of no-where (bath), and as a result, in order to continue my jouney i had to buy a vw polo from the local freeads paper and drive home on that, the front wheel of which nearly fell off cos the bearings are knackered (to give some idea, it has 1" of play at the top of the wheel. makes cornering *interesting*, but its not as slow as i thought it would be for a 1litre engine..)

so i need a new 340 1.4/1.7 propshaft, asap. must be in pretty good nick, and if possible i want the clamps as well (incase mine are fooked).

Ive still got a spare one, but no clamps, If you could come and get it, or pay the post, its yours mate, hate to say it, but those old polo's are quite good, apart from the cack brakes.

swap you my polo for the propshaft?? :)

it seems to handle ok if the wheel wasnt about to fall off.. the engine is pretty sweet (if only 45bhp)..

i did try to email you but the addy in the profile is dead..

Should the prop shaft bearings get some lubrication after all these years?

Is it possible to get to them?

propshaft bearing lubrication

I see from my Haynes manual (fig 6.42) there are two plugs at the rear of the torque tube to allow the propshaft to be disconnected from the gearbox.

I wonder if similar plugs could be fitted near the propshaft bearings to allow some lubrication to be given to the bearings from time to time?

Maybe a hole drilled , then covered with tape. Debris from the drilling might cause more harm than it is worth.....

Is this completely silly?

What are the bearings like on the 340s without the torque tube? Can they even be lubricated in any way?

Are they the same on a 360?

Do they fail often? I don't like things hidden away where you can't see them.
