Re: LOCATING DOWEL FOR STARTER MOTOR?
Hi Justin.
What is a locating dowel and what does it do?
If its that twisty bit that supports it to the block, I have one.
Cheers Mark.

Re: LOCATING DOWEL FOR STARTER MOTOR?
Mark, it's the wee round sleeve that sits in the bell-housing (outer, top) hole. You can't see it when the motor is fitted.
(The "twisty bit" is the opposite end of the starter. It's the support bracket from motor end to block.)

Re: LOCATING DOWEL FOR STARTER MOTOR?
The part I need goes into one of the 3 bolt holes on the fattest-end of the starter motor to help locate it correctly. By fattest-end I mean the part of the SM that connects to the car, eg; not the smaller end where the battery feed enters the motor but the fatter other-end which has three bolt holes, one of which has a bigger opening to locate the dowel...

I know exactly what part it is. Best you nab one from another bellhousing.
Re: LOCATING DOWEL FOR STARTER MOTOR?
There are no more 340's left in any of the scrappy's near me and the car I rob bits from from a farmers old 340 is the car I took my current starter motor from which didnt have the dowel in place sadly...
I emailed my local Volvo dealer earlier and they can get me a new one for £8.28 from Sweden, part number: 3344178
Well Pleased...

Re: LOCATING DOWEL FOR STARTER MOTOR?
UPDATE: I removed my starter motor this morning to discover that the metal locating dowel was still in place in the bell-housing. A comparison between the dowel in place and my new one from Renault revealed that the Renault one is slightly bigger!
It would be wise if anyone needs one in the future to get it from Volvo. Part Number: 3344178
