Aftermarket Steering wheel, Boss and Roofrack

Post by Roge1 » 19 Jun 2014 01:17 pm

Folks,

My 85 340DL is being drafted back into daily service, and I swore that, once the heavy steering issue was resolved (separate post elsewhere on the Forum), I would substitute the standard steering wheel for something a little smaller and sportier - does anyone have an aftermarket wheel and hub they wish to sell, or can someone provide advice/recommendations on something suitable? The car hasn't been, and will not be, drifted, so I'm not looking for anything too 'special'ised!

I'm also interested in getting a retro type roof rack to fit (in the style of oh so may Vdubs I've seen over the years) - can anyone help with this??

Many thanks

Roge1 :D

Well, roof-rack wise, I know a bloke whose father died and when they sold his house I ended-up with the roof rack which is a flat sort of galvanised thing which I dare not fit to my motor unless it scratches the paint or something. Anyhow, I think that bloke would kill me if I said this but the roof-rack I am referring to has been in front of the downstairs fireplace for the last 10 years and I haven't used it once in all that time. I guess its a 1960's standard Halfords type of straight flat roof-rack type of thing. If you're interested, then pop round one day and I'll just (quietly) leave it in the front garden for you to acquire.

Hi there,

Sounds ideal - or, at least it would if I didn't live literally the other end of the country (Aberdeenshire)! I'd happily pay for the postage/courier costs if you were of a mind to send it (the rack, not the cat!) ?

Thanks again

Hello

I'll be able to wrap this up a bit for you in about 10 days. Meanwhile, please check these fittings are OK and at the moment the rack is assembled for carrying long flat things and if you want to carry boxes and cases, etc, I think the front and back bars should be moved to the upper hole or maybe there are two extra bars that are missing although not impossible to replace?

Another question, I could dismantle the rack before sending it to you since the nuts and bolts seem to undo quite easily. Would you prefer it dismantled (probably cheaper and safer from the shipping point of view) or shall I leave it as it is and just wrap it up as best as I can??? I can't send it right away because I don't have much free time in the next week or so.

I am also registering interest on the cat. details, any dents or scrapes, how many litres water does it use, is the colour original and is it of legal height? cheers

We've had the cat since he was 12 (he was from a cat rescue place) and he is 14 now and doing OK - he does drink a lot and seems to lose a lot of water through the nose - the vet fears nasal cancer (anyone notice the slightly swollen forehead?) which is quite common in cats although he tested negative last time. Still he seems happy enough. I only got him because he was the happiest cat there.

Hi again,

Had another look at the fittings of the rack, and I'm no longer sure they would fit my 340 (has the chrome effect lip type guttering along the roof) - are you able to forward clearer pics of the feet at all?

Apologies and thanks

Oh, I'll not make an offer for the Cat either - we recently 'lost' a 2nd cat in two years, both had been long term members of the family (16yrs+)!

Rgds

Hello, here's the picture. I'll take a leg off at the weekend and see if it works with the fake-chrome weatherstrip.

We could be almost out of the woods on this one... It seems to fit lovely. It says JS Products Made in Sweden!! I am supposed to be looking after this for someone but if you would still like it on an indefinite loan basis, just let me know.

Looks retro... If Roge doesn't buy it I'm interested, got a full view photo of it on the car?

Sorry sir, I've never dared to fit it to the roof which is why its been decorating the fireplace for 7 years and if I had, I would probably want to keep it... Trying to keep a distance from this thing so I don't regret parting with it!

Actually, here's how it might look after a bit of (lousy) photoshopping...
